I need financial aid for:

Financial Aid for the Academic Year (Fall & Spring Semesters)

Continuing students must reapply for financial aid every year. Any student who wishes to receive student loans must complete the following forms:

Loan instructions and requirements will be provided with the award letter email notification. Students should not apply for loans until an award letter notification has been received.

Federal Stafford Loan [Unsubsidized]
All students applying for Stafford Loans are required to complete the FAFSA application. The borrower is responsible for interest that accrues while he or she is in school. As of July 1, 2017, the interest rate on Unsubsidized Stafford Loans is fixed at 5.84% per academic year. The program is available for an annual total of up to $20,500. As of October 1, 2017, there is a 1.066% origination fee that is taken off the principal loan amount requested. Students must complete an Entrance Counseling Quiz and a Master Promissory Note.

Grad PLUS or Private Educational Loans
If you need more funding than what is available through the Federal Stafford Loan program, you may wish to borrow a Grad PLUS or private educational loan. As of July 1, 2017, Grad PLUS loans have a fixed interest rate of 7%. As of October 1, 2017, there is a 4.264% origination fee that is taken off the principal loan amount requested. Private loan interest rates are variable and depend on one's credit. Please keep in mind that you can only borrow up to your "budget" (cost of attendance), which is indicated on your award letter, minus any aid or scholarships. Students must complete a Grad Plus Entrance Counseling Quiz and a Grad Plus Master Promissory Note.

Students are responsible for their own expenses prior to the actual disbursing of refunds after the add/drop period each term. The Business Office in the CBA Building, 15th Floor, handles all refunds. They can be contacted at 312.427.2737 ext. 408.

Financial Aid for Summer Semester

You may be eligible for student loans for the summer term while studying at The John Marshall Law School if you are taking at least 3 credit hours. If you have 2015-2016 Stafford Loan funds available, you will automatically be awarded the remaining funds and emailed. You will then login on eCommons to view my award letter and accept or reject your loan; additional instructions and information is available under Apply For or Change Loans. If you do not have 2015-2016 Stafford Loan funds remaining or not enough to meet your needs, you will need to apply for 2015-2016 Grad PLUS or Private Educational Loan.

You can find loan instructions at When completing the section with start and end dates for either the Grad Plus loan or Private Educational loan, please use "May 2016–July 2016". Grad PLUS and Private Educational loans will be processed by the school after the priority deadline on May 9.

Priority deadline is May 9. Meeting the priority deadline will ensure that students will receive their refunds in a timely matter. You will meet the priority deadline by registering for 3 or more credits and either accept your remaining Stafford Loan and/or have a new 2015-2016 (2016-2017 starts in the Fall 2016 semester!) credit approved Grad Plus, along with a completed MPN (Master Promissory Note), or Private Educational loan pending. PLUS Counseling will also be necessary if you were first credit denied for a Grad PLUS loan and then approved after appealing, or if you have an endorser.

Final deadline is July 8. You must have a loan available for the Office of Financial Aid to process. After July 8, no financial aid will be given for the summer term.

Please review the summer tuition and living expense breakdown below to figure how much you are eligible to borrow and follow the loan instructions provided. Failure to follow the instructions will cause delay in receiving your financial aid funds.

Students registered for a majority of credits from online classes will receive the reduced online only budget.

Financial Aid for Fall Semester Only

(For students who are completing their enrollment in the fall semester (December) and graduating in January.)

You may be eligible to borrow up to $20,500 in Federal Stafford Loan during your final fall semester. Please be aware that the grace period on your loans will start to run from your last date of attendance in December, not your commencement date in January. For those students who have questions or concerns about loan repayment, there will be group repayment Exit Counseling sessions scheduled during the fall semester. There will be a $1,600 budget increase request opportunity during your final semester for the bar exam. Budget Increase Request forms are available starting the first week of classes in the fall.
