Mission

Commitment to Effective Veteran Advocacy

Throughout its history, The John Marshall Law School has upheld a tradition of diversity, innovation and opportunity.  The school has consistently provided an education that connects the theory, the philosophy and the practice of law.  Through the Veterans Advocacy Course and Clinical Program, John Marshall offers students the unique experience to develop the core principles needed to become expert advocates in the legal community.

Students registered in the Veterans Advocacy Course conduct an in-depth study of federal, state and local laws pertaining to veterans' advocacy.  Through examination of the historical origins of veterans' advocacy law and the procedural and substantive texts used by the courts and attorneys, these students learn federal agency litigation practice, sharpen their analytic skills and become confident in their ability to deal with clients, federal agencies and the courts.

In addition to managing theoretical legal problems presented by veteran status, the Clinical Program emphasizes the practical aspects of handling Veteran Benefits Administration claims from the initial factual intake to the technical aspects of representation at the appellate level.  The Veterans Clinical Program affords law students the exciting opportunity to work in-person with veterans while under the direct supervision of licensed clinical attorneys and professors.  The Veterans Clinical Program affords students the opportunity to work in-person with veterans while under the direct supervision of licensed attorneys and law professors.

The Veterans Clinical Program adds to students' legal education by emphasizing the practical skills and ethical values of working with clients' real-life legal issues.  Working directly with Professor Joseph Butler, clinical students conduct initial intake interviews of veterans seeking assistance and draft memoranda outlining the relevant legal issues of each case.  Professor Butler and the clinic staff then determine whether the case will be handled by students or will be referred out to a member of the pro-bono network.
