SCHOLARSHIPS: LUCY SPRAGUE
Public Service Scholarship
ATTENTION: JMLS SENIORS
$25,000 LUCY SPRAGUE PUBLIC SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP
APPLICATION DUE DATE: March 22, 2006
The John Marshall Law School is now accepting applications for the Lucy Sprague Public Service Scholarship. This scholarship has been established to honor the memory of Lucy Sprague, JMLS 1995-96, and the things she cared deeply about. It is made possible by a grant from Lucy's mother and father, Lee T. Sprague and the Honorable George R. Sprague, Cambridge, Massachusetts District Court Judge, and Lucy's sister and brother, Cynthia Sprague and Alexander Sprague.
The scholarship award will be used to help pay the educational loans of a graduating senior who makes a commitment to public service work and obtains employment in furtherance of that commitment. Up to $25,000 is available for this scholarship. It is likely the scholarship will be awarded to only one person. The award will be paid directly by the school to the lender of the scholarship recipient. It may be paid in one lump sum or in installments over the payback period of the loans, at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee. The award may be taxable to the recipient.
If a suitable candidate is found, the Scholarship Committee anticipates awarding the scholarship prior to May 15, 2006. If, in the discretion of the Committee, no person fits the criteria for awarding the scholarship, no award will be made at this time. The amount of any award and the selection of a winner are likewise within the discretion of the Committee.
Public service work is broadly defined to mean employment at a comparatively modest salary for a private or governmental entity whose work primarily benefits public, as opposed to private interests. The determination as to what constitutes "public service work" and the interpretation of other terms of the scholarship are matters solely within the discretion of the Committee. Ordinarily a commitment of three years full time public service employment would be expected from the successful applicant. Previous award winners are Kimberly Jo Anderson, Marcel Benavides, Paul Serkland, Kathleen Pawlik, Sherri Tushnet, Jacqueline Herrera, Alexis Widlak, and Erin Gallagher.
The Lucy Sprague Public Service Scholarship is one of the most attractive awards offered by any Law School in the country. If you are a John Marshall January or June 2006 graduate and wish to be considered for this scholarship award, please send a résumé and a letter by March 9,2007 describing your commitment to public service work to: Lucy Sprague Scholarship Committee, in care of Tonishea Jackson in the Admissions Office, ext. 403. In the letter please indicate why you believe you would be a suitable recipient of the award and whether, if you receive the scholarship, you will attend the May 2006 graduation ceremonies.
Please refer inquiries about the scholarship to Acting Dean John Corkery.
