Notes from 2/15/2006 general meeting:

Canadian Law Society

At our meeting on 2/15/06 we discussed our goals for The Canadian Law Society in the Spring semester. We decided to focus on two goals:

1)     create & maintain a website for The Canadian Law Society

2)     organize an event to take place the week after spring break on Tuesday or Wednesday either at noon or at 5pm. We want to focus on TRADE between IL and Canada and our goal is to educate students on this topic (ex: just how much IL depends on trade with Canada, what kind of trade, what the role of an attorney in trade/intl. Law is, what kind of trade and areas of law are important now and growing, etc)-this remains to be narrowed down by Stu Green.

The tasks to accomplish these two events have so far been divided as follows:

TASKS:

I. Web site

1)     Creation of website-  Matt Apfel

2)     Maintenance of website- Matt Apfel

3)     Providing material to be posted on the Website- ALL MEMBERS.

4)     Deciding what will be posted on the website- NOT DECIDED. I think we should talk about who & how we will determine what will be posted on our web site. My suggestion would be to meet once a month, present all materials submitted by all the members and vote on what to post or not. But if no one wants to be involved in this, Matt & I can take this task.

II. Event

1.       Narrowing the topic of our event-Stu Green

2.       Getting a room and any supplemental auditory equipment- Henry Rawner

3.       Promotional material (posters, contacting other societies and organizations)-Agnes Jury

4.       Contacting the Canadian Consulate to secure a speaker for our event-Matt Apfel

5.       Contacting other speaker(s) for our event- NOT APPOINTED YET…anyone who wants to do this is welcome to…just let me know! Otherwise I will do it.

6.       Creating a detailed menu and budget-NOT APPOINTED YET… anyone who wants to do this is welcome to…just let me know! Otherwise I will do it.

DEADLINES:

I. Web Site:

Matt has already created the structure of the website and will be speaking to the Webmaster at John Marshall this Thursday to have it linked to the John Marshall website. Accordingly, we need to provide Matt with things to post on the web site asap.

As of right now I have asked Prof. Wojcik to write a mission statement for us and Matt will be posting the pictures of our visit at the Canadian Consulate.

I wouldn’t mind meeting on Thursday 2/23/06 at 5pm to discuss the web site and other matters in more detail.

II. Event

2/23/06-          Stu should have the narrow topic submitted so that Agnes can get started

on creating the promotional material.

2/23/06-          Specific date and time for the event should be picked. At our meeting on Wednesday we proposed the week after spring break, Tuesday or Wednesday at noon or in the afternoon. Please let me know via e-mail what you believe to be a better date & time. I will consult the LLC in Intl Buis & Trade & Prof. Wojcik for advice on this topic as well and pick the most preferred date and time.2/23/06       A list of at least 10 interesting speakers should be compiled. We are looking to attract one or two speakers from a major Chicago Law firm, an attorney who practices in the field of international law or trade with Canada etc, and/or someone who is knowledgeable on the cultural differences between Canada and US on could discuss what US entrepreneurs as well as attorneys should keep in mind/know. I suggest you e-mail me with your picks of the speaker and brief description of how that speaker can contribute to our event. Let me know as well whether you think we should have 1 or 2 speakers IN ADDITION to whomever we get to speak at our event from the Canadian Consulate. I will e-mail the entire list to everyone by Thursday and we will TRY to pick top 10 according to all of us.
