Since 1950, the New York City Bar and the American College of Trial Lawyers have sponsored the National Moot Court Competition.  It is one of the most prestigious competitions in the nation, with over 150 law schools competing annually in the regional rounds throughout the nation.  John Marshall competes in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin regional during the fall semester.  Winners of each regional then advance to the final rounds held at the New York City Bar early in the spring semester.

Recent topics include the following: (1) whether a person's Fourth Amendment rights are violated when police officers stop based on an anonymous tip regarding DWI without the officers observing him and then subsequently find a loaded gun in the vehicle; (2) Whether the Three-Strikes Law is cruel and unusual punishment; (3) whether a State's gun control law, which forbade all individuals except law enforcement official from owning or possessing handguns, violates the Second Amendment of the United States' Constitution.

The competition's official website is: http://www.actl.com/Content/NavigationMenu/AboutUs/AwardsandCompetitions/NationalMootCourt/default.htm. The problem can be found at http://www.abcny.org/YoungLawyers/MootCourt.htm.

In 2006, William Greubel and Rebecca Ptaszynski advanced to Semifinals and won Third Best Brief.  Also in 2006, Leonard Hudson and Michael Lindinger advanced to Quarterfinals and won Best Brief, and Michael Lindinger won Fourth Best Oralist.  In 2005 Catherine Howard and Daniel Taylor advanced to the Quarterfinals.
