Banner Scholarship Fund
|
In 2001, The John Marshall Law School established the Donald W. Banner Scholarship to honor Don Banner, a senior statesman in the field of intellectual property law. Banner contributed greatly to the patent system in the United States and throughout the world.
By creating the scholarship, the law school acknowledged the extraordinary efforts of Don Banner in building the reputation of the intellectual property program as an adjunct faculty member and eventually as the first director of the IP program at John Marshall.
Banner helped create the law school's legacy of opportunity and, through the scholarship, the law school seeks to continue the legacy for a deserving IP student who would walk in his footsteps.

At the time the scholarship was created, Banner said, "The John Marshall Law School has long been an outstanding leader in its programs for teaching intellectual property law. I am greatly honored that the school has created this scholarship in my name. It is my hope and expectation that the men and women who benefit from that scholarship will be wise and honorable, as well as a credit to their country and profession."
His son, Mark Banner, also a practicing intellectual property attorney and partner at Banner & Witcoff, Ltd. was a graduate of The John Marshall Law School. At the time the Banner Scholarship was created, Mark noted that "a solid legal education is essential to lawyers entering the field of intellectual property. We know John Marshall will put this scholarship to good use with deserving students." |
It is unbelievable -- almost inconceivable -- to those of us at The John Marshall Law School that we could lose both these extraordinary men in such a short period of time. Don Banner passed away in January 2006. We lost Mark Banner in December 2007.
Countless of our students, our faculty, local practitioners, and others have benefited from the time and talent that Don and Mark Banner shared through their teaching, writing, lecturing, and counseling.
The Donald W. Banner Scholarship fund has been renamed, simply and appropriately, the Banner Scholarship Fund. We believe that both Donald W. Banner and Mark Banner would be pleased to know this named scholarship is giving others the opportunity to serve the profession they both so dearly loved.
Donald W. Banner -- 1925-2006
Mark T. Banner -- 1950-2007
