 Baum Public Interest Scholarship

This scholarship has been established to honor the memory of Alvin and Ann Baum. It is made possible by alumni Joel Friedman, J.D. 1975, who wished to express his appreciation to John Marshall for providing a sound legal education.

The scholarship award will be used to help students who make a commitment to public service work and obtain employment in furtherance of that commitment. The student will agree that, as a condition of receiving this award, he or she will self-report on their employment status to The John Marshall Law School annually during the first five years after graduation from the law school.

Public service work is broadly defined to mean employment at a comparatively modest salary for a private or governmental entity whose work primarily benefits public, as opposed to private interests. The determination as to what constitutes "public service work" and the interpretation of other terms of the scholarship are matters solely within the discretion of the Committee. Ordinarily a commitment of five years full time public service employment would be expected from the successful applicant.

The Chicago Bar Foundation Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public Interest Law Scholarship

Throughout his distinguished life and career, the Honorable Abraham Lincoln Marovitz was a firm believer that financial need should not be a bar to dedicated young students who want to pursue careers in public service. For almost a century, Judge Marovitz consistently demonstrated his commitment to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds through a variety of charitable activities. Prior to his death in 2001, Judge Marovitz insured that this legacy would continue by establishing funding for a number of charitable initiatives, including the Chicago Bar Foundation Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Public Interest Law Scholarship.

The Marovitz Scholarship is intended to support a needy law student who is deeply committed to public interest work so that upon graduation financial need will not prevent the student from pursuing a public interest legal career. The Scholarship provides funds for needy public interest-minded students so they may complete law school with as little debt as possible.

    • Must demonstrate the desire to practice public interest law. Consistent with this focus, not included in this definition of public interest law are judicial clerkships, private practice, pro bono work in a traditional firm or corporate setting, most academic work, and state's attorney and other government work not fitting the above definition
    • Must demonstrate a commitment to pursue a career in public interest law, as demonstrated by an application essay, and possibly a personal interview
    • Must demonstrate the ability to achieve success as a lawyer, as demonstrated by past achievements in school or other activities, and taking into account any personal obstacles that the candidate may have overcome and other relevant considerations
    • Must demonstrate financial need, taking into account other means of funding tuition, such as other scholarship awards or personal assets

The Attorney-Client Privilege Act of 2007 (S. 186; H.B. 3013), which is currently being debated by the U.S. House and Senate, would essentially abolish the practice of federal prosecutors conditioning favorable treatment to companies under criminal investigation that waive the attorney-client privilege and disclose confidential communications. The Bill's advocates argue that this legislation is needed to cure the "culture of waiver" that exists in the U.S. Department of Justice under the guidelines set forth in the 2003 Thompson Memorandum and the 2006 McNulty Memorandum. Describe whether the McNulty Memorandum is sufficient to alleviate the concerns over waiver requests made under the Thompson Memorandum and articulate the public policy arguments in support of the legislation.

NAACP Earl Warren Legal Training Program

In 1972, LDF created the Earl Warren Legal Training Program Inc. as a separate not-for-profit corporation to expand assistance to African-American law students dedicated to civil rights and public interest work and to increase the number of African-American law students and attorneys.

National Bar Institute African American Law Student Fellowship

The National Bar Institute (NBI) was established in 1982 as the philanthropic arm of the National Bar Association (NBA). The African American Law Student Fellowship Program, a project of the Institute, was developed to assist students who are completing professional law degrees, a field where African American participation has traditionally been low.

As more African Americans have successfully entered the legal profession and their contributions have gained wider recognition, the National Bar Institute has recognized the need to support law students in public interest areas, or in those specialties deemed critical where African Americans remain underrepresented within the legal profession.

The fellowships are financed largely by NBA individual members, sections, regions, divisions, affiliates and augmented by corporations and foundations that value scholarship and believe in the potential of African American lawyers.

    Eligibility:

    • Must demonstrate a commitment to creating equality and justice for African Americans through work in their law schools, their neighborhoods and community
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
