One award of $50,000 or two awards of $25,000 each

ALVIN AND ANN BAUM PUBLIC INTEREST SCHOLARSHIP

APPLICATION DUE DATE: Monday May 7 2007

The John Marshall Law School is now accepting applications for the Alvin and Ann Baum Public Interest Scholarship. This scholarship has been established to honor the memory of Alvin and Ann Baum. It is made possible by alumni Joel Friedman, J.D. 1975, who wished to express his appreciation to John Marshall for providing a sound legal education.

The scholarship award will be used to help students who make a commitment to public service work and obtain employment in furtherance of that commitment. The student will agree that, as a condition of receiving this award, he or she will self-report on their employment status to The John Marshall Law School annually during the first five years after graduation from the law school.

Public service work is broadly defined to mean employment at a comparatively modest salary for a private or governmental entity whose work primarily benefits public, as opposed to private interests.  The determination as to what constitutes "public service work" and the interpretation of other terms of the scholarship are matters solely within the discretion of the Committee.  Ordinarily a commitment of five years full time public service employment would be expected from the successful applicant. This is the first time this Scholarship will be awarded.

If a suitable candidate is found, the Scholarship Committee anticipates awarding the scholarship in May 2007. If, in the discretion of the Committee, no person fits the criteria for awarding the scholarship, no award will be made at this time.  The amount of any award and the selection of a winner are likewise within the discretion of the Committee.

The Alvin and Ann Baum Public Interest Scholarship is one of the most attractive awards offered by any Law School in the country.  If you wish to be considered for this scholarship award, please send a résumé and essay describing your commitment to public service work to: Alvin and Ann Baum Public Interest Scholarship Committee, in care of Tonishea Jackson  in the Office of Admission, ext. 403.  In the letter please indicate why you believe you would be a suitable recipient of the award.

You may submit your essay and resume in person, via e-mail at 6terry@jmls.edu or fax at 312.427.5136
