Weldons Find Law School Together a Plus

There are those who meet their spouses in law school, but there are few who meet, marry and graduate together like David and Lauren Weldon who graduated May 22 from The John Marshall Law School.

They both attended the University of South Carolina—where each pursued an undergraduate degree in criminology and criminal justice—but they didn’t actually meet each other until later on. Married in 2010 while working their way through the JD program at John Marshall, the Weldons balanced school and home life, both graduating magna cum laude in the 2011 class.

The Weldons came to John Marshall in 2008, both on scholarship. While studying under the same curriculum, they were able to lean on each other through law school. “It is nice to have someone around who knows what your day is like and can give you concrete and meaningful advice,” Lauren said.

“Since I started a semester after Lauren, I had the benefit of someone who already had a feel for the school, first semester professors and other helpful information,” David said.

David said John Marshall offered flexible schedules so Lauren and he could avoid opposite schedules, and see more of each other. Being full-time law students can make it difficult to separate home life from school life. “It is difficult to leave school at school sometimes,” Lauren said. “We frequently discussed class or exams over dinner or on the way home from class.”

But preparing to become a lawyer with your spouse has its perks. “The fact that we will soon be attorneys allows us to always bounce questions off each other, which is nice,” David said.
