Circulation Desk The main function of Circulation is the charging out and charging in of library materials. Additionally, the Circulation Desk dispenses a variety of services for the convenience of patrons. For all your questions concerning the circulation of materials or any of the other services listed below, be sure to make the Circulation Desk your first stop in the Library.
Reserve Collection To ensure ready access to heavily-used or class-assigned materials, there is a closed collection of those materials behind the Circulation Desk. The Circulation staff will provide you with the items you need from this collection. Fines for overdue items from this Reserve Collection are stringent because the materials are in constant demand. The following materials are on reserve: current issues of law reviews, hornbooks, selected treatises, photocopied class assignments (cases and law review articles), video cassettes, audio cassettes, newspapers, and course examinations.
Loan Periods Loan periods for the circulating collection are determined on the basis of whether the materials belong to the general or reserve category, the anticipated demand for them, and the number of copies available of a particular item. The principal categories of materials and their circulation periods are noted below for your guidance. Please check with the Circulation Desk for current loan periods and policies.
General Circulation Treatises, monographs from floors 8-10 except 7M: 1 week; Bound periodicals: 24 hours
Limited Circulation Many Reserve materials circulate for 24 hours. Selected items, such as unbound periodicals, directories, form books, the first copy of textbooks required for courses, etc., circulate for 3 hours and must be returned before the Library closes. Note: Reserve materials cannot be checked out on interlibrary loan forms.
Non-Circulating The following materials do not circulate: items marked RESEARCH, REFERENCE, or DOES NOT CIRCULATE; annotated codes, microforms, loose-leaf materials, newsletters, most reporters, slip opinions, and volumes from multi-volume sets. Items from the CBA Core Collection on 7M do not circulate.
Renewals Library materials borrowed may be renewed three times if there are no other patrons requesting them. The materials need not be physically present to be renewed. However, Circulation will need the call number, author, title, copy or volume number, and the borrower's name to process the renewal. You may renew a title by contacting the circulation deartment at (312) 427-2737 xt 710 during normal Library hours. Note: Overdue materials cannot be renewed.
Holds "Holds" may be placed on materials that are in circulation by filling out the appropriate multipart forms at the Circulation Desk. The materials will be held behind the Desk after they are checked in. Books circulating for one week will be held for two days. Items circulating for 24 hours will be held for 24 hours, and items available for three hours will be held for one hour. Class videos cannot be placed on hold.
Fines It is your responsibility to return all materials that you have borrowed before the loan period expires so that they will be available to others. Failure to do so will result in the assessment of fines as follows: One-week materials $1.00 per day overdue; 24-hour Reserve or General $2.00 per day overdue; 3-hour Reserve $1.00 per hour overdue. You will be assessed a fine for lost library materials. The amount of the fine is the cost of replacing the lost material plus a processing fee of $20. You must pay all library fines before you register each semester and before graduation.
Audio-Visual Collection There are approximately 1,800 audio and video tapes in the Reserve Collection. These tapes cover a variety of subjects including make-up classes, exam reviews, moot court competitions, and a variety of special events. There are also a large number of tapes which are produced by other organizations such as the ABA, NITA and Public Television. These items are also included in the Library's on-line catalog. Audio and video tapes can be checked out for 24 hours. The Library has the necessary equipment with which to view video tapes if a patron wishes to view them in the Library. Note: Make-up class and examination review tapes cannot be renewed during the examination period.
Photocopiers The Library has eleven photocopy machines: two are located in the Copier Room on the 6th Floor (between the mezzanine stairs and the stairwell), and two more in the stairwell on the 6th Floor; two each on the 7th, 8th, and 9th Floors in the stairwell area; and one in the northwest corner of the 10th Floor. The cost of a copy is fifteen cents. The machines work with "smart" debt cards, which must be purchased from a vending machine on the 6th Floor. The cost of a card is $1.00. To purchase a card for the first time, insert a $1 bill into the machine; you will receive a card. You may then purchase copies in increments of $1, $5, $10, or $20. Photocopiers are turned off 15 minutes prior to the Library's closing. Please do not leave books on the copiers.
Security The Library has a security system which causes a beeping sound to go off should a patron attempt to leave the premises with books not properly charged out. Occasionally certain objects will trigger the alarm. If this should happen, please return to the Circulation Desk so that a staff member can determine the cause. The security system is a safeguard and we regret any inconvenience it may cause.
Study Carrels Study carrels are located along the north and east walls on Floors 7, 8, 9, and the north wall of Floor 10, and are for the exclusive use of John Marshall students and faculty. A limited number of carrels will be assigned at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters for the duration of the semester to students on the basis of established priorities. The remaining carrels cannot be reserved; however, they may be used on a first-come, first-served basis as needed. Holders of reserved carrels agree to abide by the Library's rules and regulations concerning the reservation of carrels .
Intercom Each of the four upper floors of the Library has intercom telephones located in the stairwell and near the online catalog which can be used to contact the Circulation Desk or the Reference Desk. Dial 720 for reference assistance or 710 to report problems with copiers to Circulation.
