Circulation Desk The main function of the Circulation Desk is to provide service and assistance to all patrons. Be sure to make the Circulation Desk your first stop in the Library.
Reserve Collection Hornbooks, selected treatises, photocopied class assignments (cases and law review articles), class DVDs, CDs, video cassettes, audio cassettes, newspapers, magazines, course examinations. Fines for overdue items from the Reserve Collection are higher than for other items because the materials are in constant demand.
Loan Periods Loan periods for the circulating collection are determined on the basis of whether the materials belong to the general or reserve category, the anticipated demand for them, and the number of copies available of a particular item. The principal categories of materials and their circulation periods are noted below. Please check the Circulation Desk for questions about the current loan periods and policies.
General Circulation Items in the Popular reading collection on floor 6, treatises, monographs from floors 8-10 circulate for 3 weeks. Law journals and law reviews circulate for 24 hours.
Limited Circulation Many reserve materials circulate for 24 hours. Selected items such as directories, form books, the first copy of textbooks, etc., circulate for 3 hours and may not be checked out overnight. Note: Reserve materials cannot be checked out on interlibrary loan forms.
Non-Circulating The following materials do not circulate: items marked RESEARCH, REFERENCE, or DOES NOT CIRCULATE; annotated codes, microforms, loose-leaf materials, newsletters, most reporters, slip opinions, and volumes from multi-volumes sets. Items from the CBA Core Collection on 7M do not circulate.
Renewals Borrowed library materials may be renewed if there are no other patron has requested them. The materials need not be physically present to be renewed. However, Circulation will need call number, author, title, copy or volume number, and the borrower's name to process the renewal. General Circulation materials, i.e. 3 weeks books can be renewed one time. Items may also be renewed online. Check with circulation staff to learn how to log in to you library account online. When calling to renew please provide call numbers and the borrower's name to process the renewal. General Circulation materials, i.e. 3 weeks books, can be renewed one time.
Fines Library materials must be returned before their loan period expires. Failure to do so will result in the assessment of fines as follows: 3-week materials $1.00 per day overdue; 24-hour Reserve or General $2.00 per day overdue; 3-hour Reserve $1.00 per hour overdue. Charges will be assessed for lost library materials. The amount of the charge is the cost of replacing the lost material plus a processing fee of $20. All library fines must be paid before students can register each semester and before students can graduate. Borrowing privileges may also be suspended until overdues and charges are cleared.
Audio-Visual Collection The Library has approximately 409 videotapes, audiotapes, DVD, and CDs on reserve. These media components covers a variety of subjects, including make-up classes, exam reviews, moot court competitions and a variety of special events. These items can be found on the Library's on-line catalog and can be checked-out for 24 hours. The library has the necessary equipment with which to view or listen to all of the above items. Note: Make-up classes and examination review tapes cannot be renewed during examination periods.
Photocopiers and Scanners The Library has six photocopy machines: one is located in the copier room on the 6th floor (between the mezzanine stairs and the stairwell) and one in the stairwell on the 6th floor; one each on the 7th, 8th, 9th floors stairwell area; and one in the northwest corner of the 10thfloor. The cost of a copy is fifteen cents. The machines work with school-issued IDs or with "smart" debt cards, which must be purchased from a vending machine on the 6th floor. The cost of a card is $1.00. To purchase a card for the first time, insert a $1 bill into the machine; you will receive a card. You may then purchase copies in increments of $1, $5, $10 or $20. The library cannot make change, fix or replace lost funds for the card machine; Please see the security department if you have a problem with your card. Photocopiers are turned off 15 minutes prior to the library closing. Please do not leave books on the copiers. Scanners are available for students use, please see Circulation Desk.
Security The Library has a security system which causes a beeping sound to go off should a patron attempt to leave the premises with books not properly charged out. Occasionally certain objects will trigger the alarm. If this should happen, please return to the Circulation Desk so that a staff member can determine the cause. The security system is a safeguard and we regret any inconvenience it may cause.
Study Carrels Study carrels are located on Floors 7, 8, 9, and the north wall of Floor 10, and are for the exclusive use of John Marshall students and faculty.
Intercom Each of the four upper floors of the Library has intercom telephones located in the stairwell and near the online catalog which can be used to contact the Circulation Desk or the Reference Desk. Dial 720 for reference assistance or 710 to report problems with copiers to Circulation.
