Rachel Dawson joined the Career
Services Office as an assistant director in November 2005. In that capacity,
she counsels students and alumni on career planning, job search strategies and
interview skills. She has a particular focus on programming and counseling for
LL.M. and M.S. students, and is the primary liaison for the Career Services
Office to these students.
Before joining The John Marshall Law
School, Dawson was the assistant director of the Academic Support Program at
DePaul University College of Law. She was an assistant defender for the
Illinois Office of the State Appellate Defender before moving to academia.
Dawson currently serves as vice president of the Board of Directors and the
coordinator for Minority Legal Education Resources, a supplemental bar review
program aimed at improving minority bar passage rates. Dawson has a B.A. in
political science from the University of Michigan and a J.D. from Indiana
University School of Law - Bloomington.

During the 2005 Student Bar
Association (SBA) Holiday Party, students, faculty and staff gathered for an
end of the semester wrap-up.

The Office of Faculty Development is
hosting a spring semester "Law Through the Lens" film series that will have
participants examining the legal, social and political relationships as they
are depicted through contemporary film.
Students, faculty and staff are
invited to the six programs Jan. 25 through April 5 being organized by
Professor Cynthia Bond. At each session, a law-related film will be shown
followed by brief remarks from a John Marshall faculty member. The 2005 movie
"The Exorcism of Emily Rose" will be presented at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25,
in Room 1200. Bond will lead the discussion at this first film. Future films
will be announced in this publication.
Pizza, drinks, and of course popcorn,
will be served. Bond suggests viewers brush off their law trivia for a chance
to win a pair of tickets to a Chicago movie theater offered through a special
raffle.

Professor Celeste Hammond
Activities
She presented her findings on the use
of "Letters of Intent" to the Illinois Institute on Continuing Legal Education
(IICLE) at its Second Annual Real Estate Short Course, Nov. 15-16, 2005, in Oak
Brook. Her paper, "Letters of Intent as Pre-Negotiation Contracts in Commercial
Leases," addressed risks that those negotiating commercial leases, who often
are non-lawyers, make in using "Letters of Intent" as a stage in the
negotiation process.
As a panelist at the Legal Conference
for International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) in Phoenix, Arizona on
Oct. 27, 2005, she provided an update on important case law affecting
commercial leasing and shopping center development. She was joined by Victoria
Berghl, a member of the Center for Real Estate Law Advisory Board, who is vice
president and general counsel of CBL & Associates, a shopping center REIT.
Publications
Professor Celeste Hammond's article,
"Predatory LendingA Legal Definition and Update," was published in 34
Real Estate Law Journal 176 (Fall 2005). It is based on a presentation
she made to the American Real Estate Society (ARES) in spring 2005. ARES is an
organization of academics in business schools teaching real estate-related
courses and producing real estate-related scholarship. Professor Hammond thanks
Stacey Lucas (J.D. '06) for her valuable research assistance in preparation of
this article.

He was named one of the 10 best law

He was invited by Governor Rod
Blagojevich to serve on the Advisory Committee to the newly created State of
Illinois New Americans Immigrant Policy (Dec. 2005).

His essay, "The Evolving Nature of the
Crime of Genocide" was published in 38 JMLS Law Review 1227 (summer,
2005).
He published the 2005 Cumulative
Supplement to the 4th edition of his treatise, Illinois Criminal Trial
Evidence (Law Bulletin Publishing Co., August 2005).
His article (co-authored with Timothy
Scahill), "Crawford v. Washington, the Confrontation Clause and Hearsay: A New
Paradigm for Illinois Evidence Law," 36 Loy. U. Chi. L.J. 703 (2005) was
cited by the Supreme Court of North Carolina in State v. Lewis, 619
S.E.2d 830 (2005); Illinois Appellate Court, Fourth District in People v.
