William F. Sweetnam, a partner in the
Policy and Legislation division of Groom Law Group in Washington will be the
guest speaker for a 10 a.m. program Friday, Nov. 18, "The Future of Employee
Benefits Law."
The program is hosted by the Center for
Tax Law and Employee Benefits at The John Marshall Law School.
Join Sweetnam for an open discussion on
the issues that are currently being debated in Congress, and the public policy
concerns that surround them. Sweetnam will share his personal thoughts about
the future of the federal laws that govern retirement, health, fringe benefit,
executive compensation and other employee benefits plans that are offered by
employers to employees and retirees.
Sweetnam spent the past five years as
the key advisor on employee benefits issues to President Bush, and was
responsible for providing the Assistant Secretary of Treasury (Tax Policy) with
policy analysis and advice on all aspects of employee benefits taxation and
related matters.
Prior to his Treasury appointment,
Sweetnam was tax counsel with the majority staff of the U.S. Senate Committee
on Finance; was a technical consultant at Towers Perrin; and was previously
chief counsel, Tax and ERISA, at Sunoco, Inc.
This program is open to the entire John
Marshall community, regardless of any prior knowledge of current employee
benefits laws. For additional information, contact Barry Kozak, associate
director of the graduate Employee Benefits Programs at 6kozak@jmls.edu.

"Reporters' Privilege: An Academic and
Public Policy Discussion" will be the topic for the noon program on Wednesday,
Nov. 16, hosted by The John Marshall Law School Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity
and Hellenic Law Association.
Joining in the discussion will be
Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass; Chuck Goudie, a reporter with ABC-7 TV;
media defense attorney Richard J. O'Brien of Sidley Austin Brown & Wood
LLP; First Assistant State's Attorney Robert Milan; and John Marshall Director
of External Relations Joel Daly, a former news anchor with ABC-7 TV. They will
examine the constitutional issues, both negative and positive, that have been
raised by the U.S. Attorney's Office investigation into the leaking of the
identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame. John Marshall Professor Alberto Bernabe
will serve as moderator.
New York Times reporter Judith Miller
went to jail for 85 days for refusing to name her confidential source in the
Bush administration. She was released after she said her source, I. Lewis
Libby, finally gave her permission to testify. Libby has since been indicted on
five counts. Miller was recently honored by the Society of Professional
Journalists for her insistence that reporters need to maintain the privilege of
keeping their sources confidential.
