Dean Patricia Mell stepped down as dean
of The John Marshall Law School on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, and accepted a
faculty position to continue her scholastic and research endeavors. Vice Dean
John Corkery will assume the dean's administrative duties on an interim basis.
"We are grateful for Pat's efforts and
contributions as dean," said Alfred E. Gallo, president of the John Marshall
Law School Board of Trustees. "We are pleased that she will continue to be a
member of our faculty as she takes on a more scholarly role within the law
school."
"It has been my honor to serve as dean
of this incredible law school with its unique heritage and tradition of service
to the community," Mell said. "However, I feel the time is right for me to
pursue my new scholastic and career challenges. I appreciate the board's
support for my new position."
Immediately prior to joining John
Marshall, Mell was a visiting professor at the University of Memphis Cecil C.
Humphreys School of Law, teaching criminal law and a white-collar crime
seminar. She formerly was a member of the faculty at Michigan State
University-Detroit College of Law from 1992 until her appointment as associate
dean for Academic Affairs. She served in that position from 1998 to 2001.
Mell has an A.B. degree with honors
from Wellesley College, and a J.D. degree from Case Western Reserve University
School of Law.
Corkery has been a member of the John
Marshall faculty since 1973. He has served in administrative dean positions
since 1998. Corkery received a B.S. degree from St. Louis University and a J.D.
degree from Northwestern University School of Law.
The John Marshall Law School has a
tradition of diversity, innovation and opportunity and has consistently
provided an education that combines an understanding of the theory, the
philosophy and the practice of law. Founded in 1899, the law school today is
recognized as a dynamic independent law school, promoting excellence in all
aspects of legal education. The law school provides one of the most
comprehensive and aggressive professional skills training curricula in the
country, including trial and appellate advocacy, alternative dispute
resolution, client counseling, negotiations and legal drafting. The law school
has seven Centers for Excellence that serve as its academic foundation.
