Naheda Zayyad Selected First Recipient of Zunaira Zaheer Khader Memorial Scholarship

Naheda Zayyad, a third-year student at The John Marshall Law School, has been named the first recipient of the Zunaira Zaheer Khader Memorial Scholarship at The John Marshall Law School.

Following the death of their daughter after a fatal car accident in January 2004, Syed Zaheer Khader and Zehra Zaheer Khader, the parents of the second-year student, agreed to help underwrite a scholarship in their daughter's memory. The scholarship will be awarded to a John Marshall Law School student with demonstrated financial need, with preference given to a student who is a member of the Muslim Law Student Association.

"Zunaira was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, fiancé and friend. She was a dedicated student and was well loved by many classmates and professors," said Associate Dean for Institutional Advancement Rory Smith. "Although she died suddenly in a tragic auto accident, Zunaira lives on in the thoughts and prayers of those who knew her or knew of her.

"The Zunaira Zaheer Khader Memorial Scholarship is a lasting legacy of the difference that Zunaira made in this world and will continue to touch and enhance the lives of others who will be forever grateful to Zunaira and her loving family," Smith said.

Zayyad will be graduating in January and hopes to pursue employment as a criminal lawyer. She has been vice president of the Muslim Law Student Organization, secretary of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Organization and treasurer of the Law Enforcement Society Organization.

Zayyad is working as a law clerk for the Illinois Attorney General's Office. In summer 2005, she interned with Judge Alexander White in the Law Division of Cook County Circuit Court, and with Associate Judge Rita Mary Novak. She's also been a research assistant for Professor Sonia Green.

Zayyad has worked for the presiding judge's office at the Bridgeview Courthouse during her undergraduate years at Governors State University. During her second year at John Marshall, she worked for attorney Kenneth Anspach at Brodsky & Odeh learning criminal and immigration work, and some environmental law.

Zayyad also has volunteered with the New American Initiative for Citizenship project helping immigrants through the immigration process. She's been able to give special assistance there because of her Arabic language skills.

Darfur Topic of Nov. 7 Amnesty Program

The John Marshall chapter of Amnesty International will welcome Professor Matthew Lippman of the University of Illinois at Chicago for a discussion of the issues surrounding Darfur. The program will be at 3:30 p.m. program on Monday, Nov. 7, in room 201. This is the second "Denounce Torture" program hosted by the organization.

Lippman is a leading legal writer on genocide and the 1948 Genocide Convention.

The Darfur region of western Sudan has suffered violence and destruction since February 2003 when government-sponsored militias, known as the Janjaweed, began a campaign of slaughter, rape and starvation in the region. It is estimated that more than 400,000 people have died and 2.5 million are displaced. Another 200,000 Sudanese are now living in camps after escaping to neighboring Chad. President Bush, the United States Congress and former Secretary of State Colin Powell have all declared the actions in Darfur "genocide."
