Professor Celeste Hammond
Activities
She has been invited to serve on the
Editorial Advisory Board of the Illinois Real Estate Journal, a
publication of Law Bulletin Publishing Co. The Journal is distributed to
all players in the commercial real estate industry in Illinois and the Midwest.
Robert Carr, the Journal's publisher, profiled Hammond in the July 2005
issue. In the article, "Professor of Real World Experience Adds Class," Carr
noted that educating lawyers is the important role of the Center for Real
Estate Law at The John Marshall Law School. With its M.S. degree in Real Estate
Law, initiated this academic year, the Center is educating non-lawyers in all
aspects of commercial real estate law and practice.
At Carr's request, Hammond has agreed
to provide articles for a monthly column dealing with commercial real estate
law. "Commercial Deals Need Strategic Lawyers," the first article authored by
Hammond, appeared in the August 2005 issue. In it Hammond emphasized the
importance, and distinct role, that transactional lawyers play in the industry.
Professor Susan Connor will author the
October column on the recent United States Supreme Court decision in Kelo v.
City of New London et al. Adjunct Professor Stanley Sklar of Bell Boyd, who
also is a member of the Center for Real Estate Law Advisory Board, will author
an article on Construction Law for the November publication.
Hammond said in future issues, persons
affiliated with the Center for Real Estate Law will provide topical, relevant
articles on other aspects of commercial real estate law and practice.

Timothy Trinka (J.D. `82), senior
foreign lawyer with Bae, Kim & Lee in Seoul, South Korea, is the lead
attorney for the largest private development project in the world.
Trinka, the Sept. 22 featured speaker
and guest of the Center for Real Estate Law, told students about his 24-year
career, and how he has pursued his interest in international law into an
exciting and successful career, culminating in his lead counsel position for
the largest real estate development firm in the world.
Trinka currently represents the
developers of New Songdo City, a 1,500-acre master-planned international
business center on reclaimed Incheon waterfront land located 40 miles south of
Seoul. This project is estimated to take 10 years for completion at a cost of
$20 billion. During his presentation at John Marshall, Trinka discussed the
compelling presentation of facts and figures driving the project forward from a
business perspective.
Trinka began his legal career working
as an intern for the U.S. Claims Tribunal in the Netherlands. This short-term
work experience confirmed for him his interest and commitment to pursue an
international law-focused career. After his internship, he took a position with
Ross & Hardies from 1983 to 1986. He was with Rudnick & Wolfe from 1986
to 1996 working on commercial transactions that included activity in Southeast
Asia. Most of this activity was on behalf of U.S. companies making investments
in foreign-owned entities. Because the Korean legal market is closed to outside
law firms, Trinka's work with Rudnick was through a partnership with Lee &
Ko, a South Korean firm.
In 1998, sparked by the Asian capital
market crisis, Korea opened its real estate market to foreign direct investment
which allowed for direct ownership of real estate assets. Many U.S. companies
jumped into the market at that time. By buying mortgages using a foreclosure
strategy, the companies would own the real estate assets in six months. Trinka
found himself traveling back and forth between the U.S. and South Korea so many
times that he finally made the decision to move to Seoul permanently.
Four years later in March 2002, under
the aegis of the central government of South Korea and its Free Economic Trade
Commission, a joint venture between Gale International and POSCO E&C was
formed to develop New Songdo City, and Trinka was positioned to be the attorney
to handle the transaction.
To learn more about the New Songdo City
development, visit the website at:www.new-songdocity.co.kr/. As the
project continues to grow, so does Trinka's international real estate legal
practice.
Should you have any interest in
pursuing a career in international or real estate law, please contact the
Center for Real Estate Law for further information at
realestate@jmls.edu or at 312.427.2737, ext. 500.
