Law Enforcement Organization Raises Funds for Police Memorial Foundation

On Wednesday March 23rd, the Law Enforcement Student Organization held a Krispy Kreme Fundraiser. Cops selling doughnuts was a great success. We sold over 51 dozen and raised over $1000.00. All the proceeds will be donated to the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation in the name of Pat Gerdes.

To contribute to the fund, stop by Professor Susann Maclachlan's office (Room 506). Checks should be made payable to The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation. A donation will be made by the end of April.

Pat Gerdes' husband is a Chicago Police Sergeant and she was instrumental in helping to launch the Law Enforcement Student Organization. The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation is raising money to build a memorial for fallen police officers and their families. A stone dedicated to Pat with her name on it will be placed within the park.

Law Enforcement Student Organization members (from left) Rachel Nerdahl, Jamie Dillon, John Garrido, Keith Meister and Meghan Whelehan helped make the law school's contribution to the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation successful.

U.S. News Ranks Two John Marshall Programs in Specialty Listing

The Lawyering Skills and Intellectual Property Programs at The John Marshall Law School were ranked among the most outstanding programs in the nation in the "U.S. News & World Report" annual rankings of education programs.

This is the first year that the poll ranked legal writing programs. The program at John Marshall tied for third place in the nation with Stetson University in Florida. Tied for first and second places in legal writing were Mercer University in Georgia and Seattle University. Both schools have served as host institutions for the Legal Writing Institute.

"This is wonderful recognition for John Marshall," said Professor Molly Lien, director of the Lawyering Skills Program. "Effective training in research, writing and analysis is essential to the practice of law. John Marshall understands this, and has long invested substantial resources to ensure excellence in skills training," she said. "The core of our program is our faculty. We have dedicated, long-term professors. This allows John Marshall to set a high standard. Our curriculum is very rigorous, and this is the reason the program is one of the best known in the nation."

The intellectual property program ranked 15th in the nation. The program has been ranked 10 of the last 12 years. In 2006, the IP program will mark its 65th anniversary. It is one of the oldest programs in the country.

"John Marshall has a long tradition of being at the cutting edge of intellectual property studies," said Professor Doris Long, interim chair of the Intellectual Property and Information Technology and Privacy Law Programs. "From the earliest days of the program to today we have prided ourselves on our strong faculty, including some of the finest adjuncts in the country, our cutting edge curriculum, and our dedication to scholarship.

"Our students come from around the country and the world, and enrich the diversity of views and issues that we explore in our classes. Because issues in this area change with such great frequency, our student law review, "The Review of Intellectual Property Law," is an Internet-based journal so that we can provide the latest scholarship on an up-to-the-minute basis," she added.

The Center for Intellectual Property Law also takes pride in its 11-year relationship with the Peoples Republic of China's State Intellectual Property Office. Today more than half of the attorneys in SIPO have been taken classes or earned LL.M. degrees at The John Marshall Law School.

Overall, The John Marshall Law School was ranked in the 4th tier by the magazine.
