HUD Gives Major Grant to The John Marshall Law SchoolJoseph Galvan, Midwest regional director of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), presented a $219, 668 Fair Housing Initiatives Program grant to The John Marshall Law School for its Fair Housing Legal Clinic. At the presentation ceremony Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, Galvan applauded Professor Michael Seng, the clinic's executive director, and Professor F. Willis Caruso, clinical director, for their continued work on behalf of persons discriminated against in their housing choices. The clinic accepts cases from throughout the Chicago metropolitan area and Northwest Indiana. The grant will be used to continue the work of the clinic that has an average of 50 ongoing cases. Two recently settled cases were an age discrimination case brought by a 90-year-old co-op owner threatened with eviction, and a racial discrimination case in which an African-American man was offered different housing options than a white woman. The Fair Housing Legal Clinic offers John Marshall students clinical internships. Students participate in federal and state court litigation and administrative proceedings; learn how cases are investigated and prepared; draft pleadings and prepare motions; participate fully in settlement matters; conduct discovery; and assist in trials and hearings.

Professor Wojcik served as the moderator of two panels at the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS). The first panel, which discussed Dispute Resolution Under NAFTA and the WTO, was sponsored by the AALS Section on North American Cooperation and co-sponsored by the AALS Sections on International Law and International Legal Exchange. The speakers included a mixture of academic, practitioner, and diplomatic views, including comments from Professor Natasha Affolder of the University of British Colombia Faculty of Law, Professor Dale Beck Furnish from Arizona State University College of Law, Professor David A. Gantz from the University of Arizona James E. Rogers School of Law, Professor Kevin Craig Kennedy from the Michigan State University College of Law, Professor Debra P. Steger of the University of Ottawa School of Law, Professor Cherie O. Taylor from the South Texas College of Law, Mr. Todd Weiler, a NAFTA practitioner in Windsor, Ontario (who has also previously lectured at The John Marshall Law School), and Mr. Bernardo Mendez of the Mexican Consulate General in San Francisco. The second panel that Professor Wojcik moderated was "Do They Shepardize in Canada? An Essential Introduction to Canadian Legal Research for U.S. Law Professors and Law Libraries." This panel was sponsored by the AALS Section on North American Cooperation and Co-Sponsored by the AALS Section on International Legal Exchange, the AALS Section on Law Libraries, and the AALS Section on Legal Writing, Reasoning, and Research. The speakers included John Davis, the Law Librarian at the Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in Toronto, Professor Margaret Hall of the University of British Columbia Faculty of Law, and Danielle Istl of the University of Windsor in Ontario. PublicationsIn his essay From Individual Rights to Human Rights published in the December 2004 issue of Human Rights, Professor Wojcik argues that the new name of the Illinois State Bar Association Section (previously known as the Section on Individual Rights and Responsibilities) also requires a new policy agenda that not only focuses on a broader vision of human rights, but that also welcomes and encourages the participation of its members (and particularly its law student members) who have an interest in working in the field of human rights.
