U.S. District Judge Kocoras Addresses January Graduates

U.S. District Court Chief Judge Charles Kocoras will address the 150 graduates of The John Marshall Law School at its Jan. 16 commencement at the Sheraton Hotel Chicago.

The law school will award 103 J.D. and 47 L.L.M. degrees at the 3 p.m. ceremonies.

Judge Kocoras has served on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois since November 1980. He was named chief judge in July 2002.

He began his legal career as an assistant U.S. attorney in 1971 and continued through 1977. He was a first assistant U.S. attorney, and then was assigned as a trial attorney to the Criminal Division and Special Prosecutions Division. He was later promoted to deputy chief of the divisions. Kocoras received several commendations while working as an assistant U.S. attorney.

In November 1977, Kocoras was appointed chairman of the Illinois Commerce Commission. He worked with the five-member commission for 14 months when he became a partner at Stone, McGuire, Benjamin & Kocoras. He was in private practice for nearly a year when he received his appointment to the bench.

Since 1975, Kocoras has been an adjunct professor in the Trial Advocacy program at John Marshall. He was honored for his work in 1999 with an honorary degree.

He is a former member of the Judicial Conference Committee on Criminal Law; a former member of the Federal Criminal Jury Instruction Committee for the 7th Circuit; and former member of the Chicago Bar Association Committee on Evaluations of Candidates, Investigative Division.

Animal Law Society Hosts Guest Speaker

The Animal Law Society hosted guest speaker Dr. Mary Lou Randour (third from left) for a fall semester program. Joining her are (from left) Kellie Walters, Janet Betz, Kristen Kurczewski, Tara Stuart and Beth Hefferman. Randour described the approaches for treating juvenile and adult animal abuse offenders. Through the Doris Day Animal League, Randour has worked with the FBI to include animal cruelty as a separate category in the agency's crime data reporting system.

Activities

She was honored by the Haitian-American Intellectual Property Association for her work with the group at its meeting at the Haitian Embassy in Washington, D.C. in November. She discussed intellectual property law and shared with the association's members how Haitians and the Haitian government could use intellectual property (including traditional knowledge protection) to power future economic growth.
