David Diamond, director of the Career Services Office, welcomed William Merkle (J.D. '84), associate area counsel for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), who spoke on placements with government agencies; the government honors programs; and Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program. Diamond said government honors programs are entry-level positions. Interested second- and third-year students need to be aware of the deadlines because only 40 individuals will be selected for this experience. Although most opportunities are not paid, they are considered a beneficial learning experience, Diamond said. Merkle specializes in strategic litigation for the IRS. He says there are advantages to a government job, including a good income, flexible work hours at some agencies, and some travel opportunities. Merkle said there also are disadvantages, including no bonuses, no regular work schedules, and the frustration of politics. Each government agency operates under its own work schedules. Merkle shared with students three points of information that he says he wished he had known at graduation: The John Marshall Law School has a good reputation, not only in Chicago but across the nation; alumni contact is very important; and specializing in a specific area of law can be a benefit.
