Shawn McCarthy Named 2004 Kissane Award Winner

Shawn D. McCarthy, a 2004 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, was named the June class recipient of the Elmer C. Kissane Public Service Award.

He has accepted a position with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office and will receive the $5,000 award after completing a year's service.

The award is named for Elmer Kissane (J.D. '50) who worked for 43 years at the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. He eventually served as head of the Appeals Division and chief of the Criminal Division. When he died, family and colleagues created the Kissane Public Service Award to be given to an outstanding John Marshall graduate who accepts employment at the state's attorney's office.

McCarthy learned about police work and the interaction of the police and the state's attorney from his father, Michael, a retired Hoffman Estates police officer. As a member of the Hoffman Estates Police Department's Junior Explorer Program McCarthy learned community relations and police procedures.

As a senior in college, he began volunteering with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office at the Criminal Courts Division. It was in the courtroom of Judge Ralph Reyna as he watched the interaction of the attorneys that McCarthy knew he wanted to be a state's attorney.

During his first year at John Marshall, McCarthy volunteered in Judge Edward Fiala Jr.'s courtroom. "With this opportunity, I was able to meet more assistant state's attorneys who I believe embody the mission of a prosecutor. I wanted to become a member of this office that has attorneys that are respectable, professional and dedicated to their work," he said.

McCarthy later volunteered in the Appeals Division at the Daley Center, but when he earned his 711 license as a senior law student, McCarthy returned to the Criminal Courts as a law clerk for Judge Colleen McSweeney-Moore.

McCarthy was president of the Criminal Law Society during the 2001-2002 academic year, and a member of the Wechsler National Moot Court team that competed in Buffalo, New York.

McCarthy is the son of Terri and Michael McCarthy of Crystal Lake. He is a graduate of Cary Grove High School and St. Mary's University in Winona, Minn. He resides in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood.

The award is given in memory of Elmer Kissane, a 1950 graduate who worked for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office for 43 years. McCarthy will receive the award after completing a year's service at the state's attorney's office.
