Students Host April 7 Civil Rights ProgramThe John Marshall Law School opens its April programs on civil rights with student organization-sponsored events on Wednesday, April 7. "Reflections on Brown v. Board of Education: Civil Rights Past, Present & Future" will open with a breakfast reception from 9 to 10 a.m. and opening remarks by Dean Patricia Mell in Room 3-East. A panel representing Hispanic-Americans, African-Americans and Asian-Americans will present their views on the civil rights movement from 10 a.m. to noon in Room 216. Guest speaker Carolyn Frantz from the University of Chicago Law School will address students on the issues of children's civil rights at a 12:30 p.m. luncheon in Room 3-East. William Kelley, chair of the Cook County Human Rights Commission, will join a panel addressing gender, sexual orientation and religious concerns, hosted by the Women's Law Caucus, the Gay and Lesbian Law Alliance and the Muslim Law Students Association, from 2 to 4 p.m. in Room 216. The day's program will conclude with a presentation by Colleen K. Connell, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois. These programs are hosted by the following John Marshall student organizations: American Constitution Society, Hispanic Law Students Association, Black Law Students Association, Asian American Law Student Association, Muslim Law Student Association, Gay and Lesbian Law Alliance, Women's Law Caucus, the Student Bar Association, and the Office of Alumni Relations. Top Of PageMoore Wins Illinois Bar Foundation ScholarshipThird-year student Donna L. Moore is The John Marshall Law School's 2004 recipient of the Illinois Bar Foundation Scholarship. Moore is a graduate of Chicago Vocational High School, and received a bachelor's degree in general studies from Roosevelt University. She received a master's degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix. After earning her J.D. degree in June 2004, Moore plans to work for a civil litigation firm in Chicago. Moore and her two daughters, Natasha and Sharita, live on Chicago's south side. Moore is the daughter of Rev. Floyd and Captola Moore, also of Chicago's south side. The Illinois Bar Foundation offers a need-based scholarship consistent with its goal to promote the study of law to second- and third-year law students who have demonstrated an accomplished academic record and are involved in diverse extracurricular and community activities including the Illinois State Bar Association. The Illinois Bar Foundation offers a $2000 award to one student from each of the Ill. law schools.

This is the second year students have marched in Chicago's St. Patrick's Day Parade.Top Of PageThree Writing Workshops ScheduledElizabeth Kadlec, director of The Writing Resource Center, is offering valuable end-of-semester writing workshops in the continuing series offered by The Writing Resource Center this academic year. "Grammar Review Workshop," Wednesday, March 31, 4 to 6 p.m., in Room 527. "Pre-Writing Strategies and Overcoming Writing Anxiety," Tuesday, April 6, 12:30 to 2 p.m., in Room 531, or from 4 to 6 p.m., in Room 201. "Editing Techniques and Citation Guidelines," Tuesday April 13, from 12:30 to 2 p.m., in Room 531, or from 4 to 6 p.m., in Room 201. These workshops are open to all students. Students can reserve a space for a workshop, or ask for more information about these workshops from Kadlec at 6kadlec@jmls.edu or at 987.1445. The panel will feature a speaker from the Chicago Chapter as well as a speaker from Fair Housing. The focus has been fund raising to build a home in the Pilsen neighborhood. Refreshments will be served. March 30Delta Theta Phi and Lambda Alpha will feature representatives from the LaSalle Bank to continue its "Art of the Deal: Lender's Perspective" at 5:00 p.m. in room 201. The International Law Society has invited speaker, Margriet Vonno, to introduce its program "The Business and Trade Relationship between the U.S. and the Netherlands" at 12:30 p.m. in room 1200B. Vonno is the economic counselor at the Royal Netherlands Embassy. The Gay and Lesbian Legal Alliance will feature Mr. Paul M. Smith of Jenner & Block discussing "Teaching Lawrence v. Texas" at 5:00 p.m. in room 3 east. March 31The John Marshall Chapter of the American Constitutional Society will meet at 11:45 a.m. in room 3 East. Geoffrey R. Stone will speak about "The Age of McCarthy: A Cautionary Tale." The $10 fee includes a buffet lunch. The Hispanic Law Student Association will show a movie at 5:00 p.m. in room 201. April 2The Annual Hispanic Law Student Association Fiesta will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. in room 200. This is a great evening of fun, dancing, entertainment and good food. The Honorable Jesse Reyes (J.D. '82) will be present. Delta Theta Phi will be selling "Shoes" for the March of Dimes... On April 12 at 12 p.m. in room 3 east there will be a special luncheon featuring speeches by candidates running for SBA offices, as well as the presentation of student awards. Top Of Page |

He was honored by the Mayor and Village of Skokie Trustees on March 9, 2004 for five years of volunteer service on the Human Relations Commission. He will continue to serve on the commission. In February, he chaired the activities of the Village's Black History Month that featured the exhibit of nationally renowned and award winning artist Bruce Brown, whose paintings and lithographs were displayed in the Skokie Library for five weeks.
