Commencement Speaker Tells Graduates be True to Yourself and the ProfessionCommencement keynote speaker U.S. Magistrate Judge Arlander Keys reminded graduates Sunday, Jan. 18, that an attorney's reputation is the most important thing he or she has, and that by accepting the role of attorney, graduates are expected to meet not only personal but professional obligations. Speaking to a packed house at the Chicago Sheraton Hotel, Keys told the 172 graduates and their families that a person's name is what one builds his or her life upon. "Protect it at all costs. Your reputation always precedes you," he said. Just as attorneys talk about judges, judges discuss attorneys _ their promptness, demeanor, preparedness and courtroom abilities. "If you're known to be credible, that gets around," the judge explained. Keys also reminded graduates to have great integrityan essential for all good attorneys. "Be honest," he told them. "The old fashioned handshake will suffice in some cases," if your clients and fellow attorneys can bank on your integrity. "Don't underestimate the importance of your relations with others," he added. Whether it's a kind word for a clerk or bailiff or a returned phone call to a fellow attorney, actions mean much for your reputation. "You're a big shot now and everyone knows it. You don't have to remind people," Keys said as the crowd chuckled. "Being a lawyer is an honor. You are more fortunate than most in your community," Keys told the graduates. "The practice of law is a noble profession. Go out into the world and make a difference."
