Teams Announced for 14th Criminal Justice Trial CompetitionThe John Marshall Law School will host teams from 20 law schools for the 14th Annual National Criminal Justice Trial Advocacy Competition slated for April 1, 2 and 3. This award-winning competition, now preparing for its fourteenth annual event, has been host to over 100 law schools and over 1,000 law students from throughout the United States, England, Ireland, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico. Professor Ronald C. Smith has directed the competition since its founding. The annual event is co-sponsored by the American Bar Association Criminal Justice Section and The John Marshall Law School. Included in this year's competitors will be a team from a law school in New Zealand is among the 2004 competitors. Smith also announced that The Honourable Society of Gray's Inn, London, UK, has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2005 Competition. The participating schools for the 2004 trial competition are: Columbia University School of Law in New York, The University of Connecticut, Duquesne University School of Law in Pennsylvania, Florida State University College of Law. Also, Fordham University School of Law in New York, Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., The University of Georgia School of Law, Harvard Law School in Massachusetts, University of Houston Law Center, The University of Illinois College of Law, The John Marshall Law School. And, Lewis and Clark Law School in Oregon, Louisiana State University Law Center, Northwestern University School of Law, St. John's University School of Law in New York, Stetson University College of Law in Florida, Syracuse University College of Law in New York, Victoria University in New Zealand, Washington University School of Law in Missouri, and Whittier Law School in California. The standby teams are from Brooklyn Law School, Chapman University School of Law in California, and the University of Michigan Law School. In the 2003 competition, the University of Georgia School of Law prevailed over Harvard Law School. Both have been invited back for the 2004 competition. "This competition is widely regarded as the premier trial advocacy competition for law schools, and over 50 schools seek an invitation each year," said Smith. "The competition hosts 20 teams. Scores of top-level Chicago-area judges and lawyers volunteer to evaluate the student advocates." John Marshall students will have the opportunity to observe these trials and join in the competition's activities in spring. Top Of PageLearning the Legislative Ropes: Lobbying in IllinoisThe John Marshall Law School and The Chicago Bar Association are co-hosting "Learning the Legislative Ropes: Lobbying in Illinois," a look at the role of the lobbyist in the legislative process, from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17. The free program will be in Room 1200 at the law school, 315 S. Plymouth Ct., Chicago. Illinois Appellate Court Justice Alan J. Greiman, will moderate the panel of two leading experts on the Illinois legislative process, former Illinois Senator Jim Durkin (J.D. '88), now with Wildman Harrold Allen & Dixon, and Lawrence J. Suffredin Jr., legislative counsel for The Chicago Bar Association and a member of the Cook County Board. Their discussion will focus on the role of the lobbyist and how to most effectively represent clients in Springfield. Top Of PageComputer Law Update Program Meets Nov. 21 at John MarshallThe world of the Internet and the problems faced by its users will be the topics for a 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 21 program, "A Computer Law Update: Spam, Pop-Ups, Hacking, Theft of Trade Secrets and Other Security Issues," being presented at The John Marshall Law School, 315 S. Plymouth Ct. The program is free to John Marshall students, although registrations are being accepted by Kevin Thompson at Davis, Mannix & McGrath at kthompson@dmmlaw.com. Guest speakers for this program, co-sponsored by The John Marshall Law School and the Internet Law Committee of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago, are Steven M. Wernikoff of the Federal Trade Commission; David S. Fleming of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione; David W. Simon of Foley & Lardner; Professor David Sorkin of The John Marshall Law School. Thompson of Davis, Mannix & McGrath, will moderate the program. Wernikoff, a staff attorney at the FTC, specializes in Internet-related consumer protection matters, and has served as lead counsel in numerous FTC civil prosecutions involving online issues. Fleming is a shareholder with the Chicago-based intellectual property law firms Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione. He concentrates is practice in trademark law, focusing on litigation in federal courts and before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, as well as the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Professor Sorkin teaches and researches Internet law and policy, informational privacy, consumer protection and dispute resolution. He is a nationally recognized expert in spam and spam laws and has testified before the FTC on the effects of spam. Simon, a partner at Foley & Lardner, is a member of the litigation department and advises clients on compliance with, and enforcement of, criminal intellectual property laws. Thompson is an associate with Davis, Mannix & McGrath, concentrating on intellectual property law. He is chair of the Internet Law Committee of the Intellectual Property Association of Chicago. John Marshall Students Volunteer for Halloween Charity Event
