John Marshall Readies Itself As 21st Century Urban Law School

Dean Patricia Mell invited faculty, staff, students and friends of The John Marshall Law School to join her in fashioning the 104-year-old institution into the archetype of an urban law school in the 21st century.

"Our challenge as we move forward will be to assess the meaning of opportunity in the 21st century and to position ourselves in such a way as to identify and attract talented, disciplined students of diverse backgrounds who want the opportunity to pursue a legal career," she told guests at the Convocation ceremony Oct. 18.

The John Marshall Mell envisions will offer students not only a sound legal foundation, but also "advanced degrees in law, combined with the type of mentoring and practical experience that will make them highly marketable commodities to employers," she said.

The school also will be a place where: non-lawyers will receive graduate legal expertise to help them with their businesses as they compete in a global marketplace; research in specific areas of law and practice will further support the community in Chicago, in Illinois, and beyond, with service in clinics and seminars; new technologies will be used to bring classes not only to law students, but also lawyers, government representatives and business people around the world;and enrollment will reflect the changing demographics of this country.

"This is where we are headed. This is where we want to put our other foot down in the 21st century - and it is all within our reach because the work has already been started; the foundation already laid in the programs and aspirations of the faculty, trustees, students, and alumni of The John Marshall Law School," Mell told the audience.

"We already offer a wide range of academic and extracurricular programs to hard-nosed students who want useful, real-world knowledge, providing those students, of all interests and abilities, with amazing experiences.

"John Marshall historically has, and will continue, to demonstrate a remarkable adaptability that the legal profession will need in the coming decades," she said.

"John Marshall is an incredible law school with a formidable presence for hard work here in Chicago. There is much in our history to be proud of and much to look forward to.

"We, The John Marshall Law School community and I, have just begun our walk together," Mell added. This path includes a new marketing initiative to bring the great things happening at The John Marshall Law School before the public.

It also includes introspection on the part of the faculty. Their work calls for recognizing the law school's shortcomings and seeing them as challenges on which to base improvements. "We will take advantage of our findings to dream, to plan and then use them to better ourselves," she said.

"We will not let the pursuit of popularity or the inconsistences of fashion deter us from doing the right thing, from crafting a future for our law school that continues to set us apart from the ordinary and the mundane."
