The award was presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Bar Association (ABA) in August. The group was chosen by a committee of law students from around the country, which based the selection on programs implemented, ability to effectively represent the students and overall organization of the SBA. The 2002-2003 executive board implemented many programs throughout the year, including: Orientation Student Advisor Program to help entering students adjust to the commitment of law school; Two Student Organization Fairs during the year, to enhance student involvement in the law school through more than 30 student organizations; Law Week, with daily guest speakers addressing various aspects of the legal profession; Safe Walk Program instituted after a series of crimes in the area; Guest representative from the Illinois State Bar association discussing tips on taking the bar exam; Barrister's Ball, with more than 400 students, faculty and staff attending the formal event at the Chicago Hilton Towers. The SBA continuously provided a strong voice for the student body at meetings of the John Marshall Board of Trustees, Board of Visitors, executive faculty committees, student advisory committees and deans. The SBA board also participated in the Decanal Search Committee when the law school was in the process of selecting its new dean, Patricia Mell. This is not the first time the 2002-2003 board was recognized by the ABA. In spring 2003, the organization was awarded three Bronze Key awards for the Law Student Division. The membership awards honored John Marshall for the highest percentage of membership in the 7th Circuit, highest overall membership in the 7th Circuit and most improved membership in the 7th Circuit. Career Services Welcomes Alumni to Employers Night
The Career Services Office welcomed back more than two dozen alumni and recruiting personnel who represent some of Chicago's biggest firms and local agencies during the annual "Meet the Employers Night" program Sept. 3. These alumni shared their insights into what firms' needs are, the interviewing process, their practice areas and what life is like after law school. "This was a very successful program. I know the students who attended were given some excellent advice," said Assistant Dean Nancy Thompson. "We have more than 50 employers interviewing students both on and off campus this fall. Altogether some 90 employers have requested resumes from John Marshall students as part of the fall recruiting season." John Marshall graduates are employed in 33 of the 35 largest firms in Chicago. Assistant Dean Thompson noted, "even if students were unable to attend this reception, the alumni who participated are great contacts. As Dean Mell said in her welcoming remarks, the true importance of this type of event is the introductions that are made between students and alumni which can lead to lasting, professional relationships." For that reason, throughout the year the CSO will sponsor more than 60 programs designed to help students explore their career options, meet alumni and conduct an effective job search.
