John Marshall Student Named International Graduate of the YearJohn Marshall Law School graduate Nathan Wayne Eckley was recently named the 2003 J. Will Pless International Graduate of the Year by the Court of Appeals of the Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity.
Selection for the $3,000 scholarship award was based on applications submitted by students from the United States, Canada and Mexico. The finalists from each chapter were submitted to compete for the province title. Eckley was selected the single winner from more than 30 province finalists by a panel at the international headquarters in Washington, D.C. He was chosen based on academic excellence, his work for Phi Delta Phi, his extracurricular activities before law school and during his law school career. Eckley studied at John Marshall as a Dean's Scholar. As a John Marshall Law Review candidate, he wrote an article discussing bio-ethics and international food regulations, which was published in the spring 2002 edition. Other extracurricular activities during his law school career included a research assistantship for Professor Timothy O'Neill, a judicial externship for Chancery Judge Julia M. Nowicki, as well as serving as a student advisor for incoming students. Eckley earned his J.D. degree magna cum laude in June 2003. Eckley says he is looking forward to applying the skills and ethics he acquired at John Marshall in his career as an attorney in public service. Eckley graduated summa cum laude from the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Agriculture in 1999. In 2002, he was a recipient of the Phi Delta Phi Lloyd G. Balfour Scholarship Award.
