Outstanding Women Lawyers Recognized by The John Marshall Law School

The John Marshall Law School is sponsoring a program, "Stepping Up to the Challenges: Outstanding Women and Their Work in the Law," from 2 to 5 p.m., March 27, at the Union League Club in Chicago.

The program, organized to celebrate the proud tradition of the law school admitting and educating women from all walks of life during the past 100 years, will applaud the accomplishments of women today in the legal profession and address what can be done for women who will join the legal profession in the future.

Commissioner Leslie E. Silverman of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission will give the keynote address. A panel discussion moderated by Professor Susan Connor of The John Marshall Law School will feature alumna Crystal Caison, inspector general for the Illinois State Treasurer's Office; Mary Dempsey, commissioner of the Chicago Public Library; Bernard M. Judge, editor and publisher of the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and Chicago Lawyer; alumna Amy Kovalan, associate dean of administration and chief financial officer at Northwestern University School of Law; and alumna Dixie Lee Peterson, deputy general counsel for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services at Cook County Juvenile Court.

All proceeds from the event will benefit The John Marshall Law School Women's Scholarship Program. The cost to attend is $25. The program is free for law school students, but a contribution to the schiolarship fund is recommended.

47th Annual IP Conference

The John Marshall Law School's Center for Intellectual Property Law welcomed Edward R. Kazensk (center), deputy commissioner for Patent Resources and Planning for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, as the luncheon speaker for the 47th Annual Conference on Developments in Intellectual Property Law in February. The John Marshall Law School Acknowledged by ABA

For the third year in a row, The John Marshall Law School was awarded Bronze Key Awards from the American Bar Association's Law Student Division (ABA/LSD) for outstanding membership. This year, the law school was honored for highest percentage of membership in the 7th Circuit, highest overall membership in the circuit and for the most improved membership in the circuit. Accepting the awards on behalf of The John Marshall Law School were (from left) Lubaina Doriwala, governor of the 7th Circuit of the ABA/LSD; Courtney Elliott, executive lieutenant governor for the circuit; and Jennifer Irmen, Student Bar Association president. Doriwala also awarded Elliott a Silver Key Award for her outstanding leadership.

Careers in Corporate Law Examined

The Corporate Law Association and the Career Services Office recently co-sponsored a program, "Corporate Law 101: An Insider's Guide to Corporate Practice." Corporate Law Association Helps Underprivileged School

The John Marshall Law School Corporate Law Association recently held its second "Crayon Drive" for underprivileged students. This year's recipient of the collection was the second grade class of Michael Faraday Elementary School in Chicago. Professor William Mock

Publications

He has agreed to contribute several entries to a new Encyclopedia of International Development to be published by Routledge, a London publisher. His entries range from trade law topics to issues of transparency and accountability. The Encyclopedia's general editor, who is a professor at the London School of Economics, solicited Professor Mock's participation.

Professor Anthony Zito

Publications

His article, "A Call for the Adoption of Federal Rule of Evidence 702 for the Admissibility of Mental-Health Professional Expert Testimony in Illinois Child Custody Cases" was published in 27 Southern Illinois University Law Journal 1 (Fall 2002).

His article, "The Intentional Tort of Patient Dumping: A New State Cause of Action to Address the Shortcomings of the Federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA)" was published in 52 American University Law Review 175 (October 2002).

It is fiesta time! This is a fun-filled evening sponsored by the Hispanic Law Student Association. The Honorable Ruben Castillo of the U. S. District Court and a John Marshall alumnus, will be the featured guest. There will be music, dancing and good food. All are welcome. 6:00 p.m., room 200.
