ABA Members Volunteer at Annual Work-A-Day Program

More than a dozen John Marshall student members of the American Bar Association-7th Circuit Law Student Division volunteered on a fall Saturday for the annual Work-A-Day project.

Teaming up with the Chicago Park District, students from the 7th Circuit helped run the Pumpkin Patch at Oz Park in Chicago on Oct. 26. John Marshall students joined with students from three other Chicago law schools to help paint children's faces, run games, assist in the pumpkin patch and pumpkin painting station, and help with the pony rides and petting zoo.

"The many activities attracted hundreds of families, and the law students played an integral part in the Pumpkin Patch's success," said Courtney Elliott, a second-year John Marshall student and Executive Lt. Governor of the 7th Circuit. "Students from the 7th Circuit had the chance to bond with students from other schools while making many children's Halloween a special one!"

Work-A-Day is an annual event for the ABA-LSD. In 2001, John Marshall students helped paint a Chicago school.

Lubaina Doriwala and Matt Hector assisted children at the petting zoo.

Courtney Elliott, ABA representative and 7th Circuit Executive Lt. Governor, prepares to paint another child's face at the Pumpkin Patch party at Oz Park.

Volunteering at the ring toss game were John Marshall students (from left) William Moore, Ronak Joshi, Ann Carrera and Leanne Conn.

Professor David E. Sorkin Addresses Spam at Internet Conference in Japan

Professor David Sorkin of The John Marshall Law School will be the keynote speaker for the Information Network Law Association conference Nov. 30 in Kyoto, Japan. The conference focuses on regulation of Internet spam.

After his presentation, Sorkin will participate in a panel discussion with Japanese lawyers, government officials, and scholars.

Sorkin is an internationally recognized expert on spam and is widely quoted in trade journals, magazines and newspapers. He recently appeared on an ABC-TV Channel 7 news segment in November on Internet spam.

Sorkin was invited to the conference in Kyoto by Professor Makoto Ibusuki of Ritsumeikan University. Professor Ibusuki was a visiting scholar at John Marshall in 1997-1998. Sorkin contributed a chapter on spam to his book, Cyberspace Law, published in 2000.

After leaving Japan, Sorkin will fly to Australia to teach in Southern Cross University's summer law school at Byron Bay, New South Wales, in December. He will co-teach a course on Cyberspace Law, and also will be a guest speaker for two other courses, Privacy and the Public Sector and International Intellectual Property. Sorkin is teaching in the Byron Bay summer school for the second time; he co-taught the privacy course in 2001. He also traveled to Australia in May 2002, when he spoke at conferences on Internet governance and cyberliberties, both of which were hosted by the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

Since 1999 Sorkin has been a panelist for Internet domain name disputes under the ICANN dispute resolution policy. He has participated in deciding approximately 50 domain name disputes, including challenges brought by America Online, Coca-Cola, Dial-A-Mattress, Knight-Ridder, Madonna, and Vivendi Universal.

Fair Housing Center/Clinic

Professor F. Willis Caruso, Clinical Director and Lillian Seymore, Testing Coordinator for The John Marshall Law School Fair Housing Legal Clinic presented a Fair Housing Program for the Fair Housing Council of Central California on November 14, 2002, in Fresno, California. The training was for attorneys and support staff from central California, which included the area from Sacramento on the north to Palm springs on the south. The attorneys included Legal Aid, Private and City attorneys. In addition, paralegals and investigative staff attended the seminar. Topics included an update of the Holley and Cuyahoga Falls cases, which will be argued in the U.S. Supreme Court on December 4, 2002 and January 21, 2003, respectively, and other case law developments. Particular issues that arise in insurance, lending and predatory lending case testing were covered along with new developments in Internet research and investigation.

Professor F. Willis Caruso is providing assistance to Northern Mississippi Legal Services with respect to some thirty fair housing cases that are expected to be filed by The North Delta Mississippi Enterprise Community before the end of December 2002. The thirty cases are a result of fair housing legal seminars and tester training provided by Professor Caruso and Ms. Seymore to The North Delta Mississippi Enterprise community during the past two years. The John Marshall Law School Fair Housing legal Support Center has provided Enterprise Community in their efforts to establish a viable fair housing program to eliminate fair housing abuses in the North Delta of Mississippi. Professor Caruso and Ms. Seymore are scheduled for a similar legal seminar and tester training in Oxford and Sardis, Mississippi, April 26 and 27, 2003.

Holiday Hours

The school's administrative offices and library will be closed from December 21, 2002 through January 1, 2003. Except for a security guard, a skeleton maintenance crew, and an individual that will sort faculty mail beginning at noon on December 27 and 30, the staff will not be working. Any faculty member who wishes to come into the building on December 26, 27, and 30 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. should email Marty D'Ambrose by Thursday, December 19th. If you have advised Marty D'Ambrose in advance, you will be asked to sign in and out at the security desk. The guard may ask for identification, so be sure to have your identification card available. There are times when the guard may briefly be away from the service desk. If that occurs, please wait for him to return. Since we are operating with a skeleton staff it is expedient to know who is in the building and where they will be working.
