Law School Extends Welcome to Chinese Attorneys

Faculty, staff and invited guests gathered at the beginning of the fall semester to welcome a delegation of 32 attorneys studying at The John Marshall Law School.

The group includes two LL.M. students, Huang Runyuan and Xia Fei, who are students at East China University of Politics and the Law in Shanghai. Professor Kevin Hopkins and alumna Di Jiang taught American legal courses at East China University this summer as preparation for the students coming to John Marshall to complete their degrees. In January 2002, the law school awarded its first LL.M. degrees in intellectual property law to 14 Chinese attorneys.

This semester the law school is also hosting judges and members of the State Intellectual Property Office. They are in lectures given by John Marshall professors and invited guests. The lectures are introducing the Chinese guests to the U.S. government structures under the Constitution, the American legal system, legal writing and research, international trade law and professional responsibilities and legal ethics.

The John Marshall Law School is marking its 10th anniversary of working with the State Intellectual Property Office in the People's Republic of China. The program has fostered an ongoing exchange of attorneys and faculty.

The U.S. Air Force has presented Capt. Elizabeth D. Durfee Pullin (J.D. '01) with two awards for her achievements during her first year in the military.

Pullin, a past associate justice for The John Marshall Law School Moot Court, was the recipient of the American Trial Lawyers Association Award from the spring 2002 Judge Advocate Staff Officer Course. The ATLA Award was presented to Pullin for her exceptional trial advocacy skills displayed during two moot courts and a discharge board proceeding during the training program at Maxwell Air Force Base.

Pullin also received the General Henry "Hap" Arnold Leadership Excellence Award from her Commissioned Officer Training Class in fall 2001. She was judged on a number of skills, including response to questions from a military officers' panel, her military bearing, and leadership of her student training wing.

Pullin is serving as an assistant staff judge advocate with the 49th Fighter Wing, at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico.

Pullin received a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a master's degree from the University of Wyoming. Before coming to John Marshall, Pullin was an intern with the Wyoming Public Defender's Office.

Fair Housing Center/Clinic

The John Marshall Fair Housing Legal Support Center conducted its 27th National Fair Housing Conference at the law school last weekend with more than 100 persons from 22 states attending. Unlike most other conferences of the Center, this program was not subsidized and a registration fee was charged to each of the participants. The topic for the conference focused on discrimination in subsidized housing units. A large number of the participants were from local housing authorities. The United States Supreme Court has decided to review two fair housing cases during this October term, and the attorneys who will be presenting those cases gave a summary of the issues and points of law that will be argued to the Court.

The Fair Housing Legal Support Center's advisory board also met on Friday evening to outline upcoming events and activities for the Center.
