Johnston is past chair of the Individual Rights and Responsibilities Section Council, and is a member of the Federal Discovery News. He also has been actively involved in the National Symposium on Racial Profiling and Traffic Stops and Legal Issues for Drug Interdiction Officers. Johnston, a partner with Altheimer & Gray, previously worked as an assistant Illinois attorney general, and was counsel to Waubonsee Community College. Fruehling, of Urbana, was recognized for his community service to the Red Cross in presentations to high school students about the dangers of drunk driving. ISBA also honored him for his efforts at helping the Hispanic population gain access to the court system. Fruehling is with the firm Heyl, Royster, Voelker & Allen, and is serving as president of the Champaign County Bar Association. He also is a member of the ISBA Board of Governors. Beaudet was honored for his initiatives on behalf of the Native American community. He has worked to both educate the Native Americans about legal issues and build trust for the legal system among them. Beaudet has been a liaison between the court system, quasi-judicial tribunals and bar associations to help educate the legal community about Native American people and customs. He also helped establish the Illinois Native American Bar Association in 2000 and served as its first president. Beaudet is assistant director and assistant chief administrative law officer for the Chicago Department of Administrative Hearings. Before joining the city, he was with Rubenstein & Rubenstein, and had a solo practice. Beaudet also practiced with Edge & Ellison in Birmingham, England, after completing graduate law studies at Oxford University, Salzburg University and the National Judicial College. Gamrath was honored for the piece "New Stock Options at Divorce: Legislature Treats Stock Options as Marital Property" which was published in the March 2002 issue of the ISBA magazine. This is the third honor for Gamrath this year. She was named one of the "40 Under 40" attorneys by Law Bulletin Publishing, and the Chicago Bar Association Alliance for Women presented her the Alta May Hulett Award. He gave a presentation about Cutting Edge Issues in Fair Housing Law at the 2002 Illinois Statewide Legal Services Advocates Conference on July 30. This is the first statewide conference for legal services attorneys in fifteen years. Approximately 200 attorneys who work with legal organizations that serve the poor attended the conference. Professor Seng discussed some of the most current issues that are arising in fair housing cases. These included issues involving the First Amendment, accessibility issues affecting persons with disabilities, discrimination against persons who receive section 8 subsidies, discrimination in homeowner's insurance, and predatory lending practices. He also discussed the two cases that will be argued in the United States Supreme Court this fall: Holley v. Meyers, involving the liability of a broker for the acts of his agents, and Cuyahoga Falls v. Buckeye Community Hope Foundation, involving a referendum to keep affordable housing out of a community. Professor Seng was happy to see a number of John Marshall alumni who are presently employed by legal services organizations. Top Of PageSchedule of EventsAugust 11
