The John Marshall Law School Names Sonia Bychkov Green To Lawyering Skills Team

Sonia Bychkov Green has been named interim associate director of Lawyering Skills at The John Marshall Law School.

Green will work with Professor Maureen Kordesh, the Lawyering Skills program director, in coordinating the work of faculty during the lawyering skills sequence. She will also teach in the program. Green was assistant professor of legal research and writing at IIT-Chicago Kent College of Law, where she taught legal writing, conflicts of law and international law courses for the past six years. She also has taught legal writing as an adjunct instructor at Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

The Lawyering Skills program at The John Marshall Law School has won national acclaim. The law school is one of the few schools in the country that mandates students take four semesters of Lawyering Skills. The first three courses in the sequence teach the basics of legal research and problem analysis; introduce persuasive writing techniques, including the drafting of trial court memoranda and appellate briefs; and develop oral argument skills. As the program progresses, the problems posed become increasingly more complex, requiring more sophisticated research and writing ability.

In the fourth semester, students draft pleadings, wills, commercial contracts and other documents of general legal practice preparing graduates to proficiently perform many tasks that often confront newly licensed lawyers.

Green will share not only classroom experience but also law practice experience with John Marshall students. After graduating from the University of Chicago Law School, Green practiced in insurance and commercial litigation with McCullough, Campbell & Lane, and Bates Meckler Bulger & Tilson.

Green, who emigrated from Russia to the United States as a young girl, received a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in international relations from the University of Chicago. She also was a Ford Foundation Scholarship recipient during her law school career. She used the scholarship for summer study at the Hague Academy of International Law.

She has examined how legislatures and courts create and define laws about language use. Her article "Language of Lullabies: the Russification and de-Russification of the Baltic States" was published in 1997 by the Michigan Journal of International Law, and she now is researching bilingualism and English-only laws in the United States. Green lives in Oak Park with her husband, Colby Green, and their son, Harrison.
