Cybercrimes Are Topic for October Conference At The John Marshall Law SchoolTechnology has revolutionized the way we live - and it is creating a revolution in crime. On-line fraud, identity theft, evidence collection and manipulation, cyberstalking and SPAM are invading our work habits, our relationships and our pocket books. These are among the topics to be explored during a three-day Cybercrime Conference Oct. 25, 26 and 27, co-sponsored by The John Marshall Law School's Center for Information Technology and Privacy Law and the Criminal Justice Section of the American Bar Association. The program is at the law school, 315 S. Plymouth Ct., Chicago. "We have assembled an outstanding roster of participants from the federal government, the judiciary, private practice and the academic community. These cutting-edge speakers and panelists will alert us on the latest electronic scams and intrusions, and provide us with current thinking on the legal ramifications of the new technology," said Ron Smith, chair of the ABA Criminal Justice Section and a professor at The John Marshall Law School. "A barely-mapped universe is here and becoming more challenging each week. We will be left behind unless we are aggressively diligent in learning the culture, language, power and pitfalls of this new technology." "We will inform participants on what the government is doing to prevent cybercrime and how legislators and the courts are reacting to this international dilemma in all its facets _ from child pornography to transborder/international implications," noted Leslie Ann Reis, director of the Center for Information Technology and Privacy Law at The John Marshall Law School. On the list of more than four dozen speakers are: Shawn Henry, chief of the Computer Intrusions Unit of the FBI; John Stark of the Securities and Exchange Commission; Sean Renshaw of the U.S. Customs Service's Cybersmuggling Division; Chuck Curran with America Online; and Jim Dempsey, senior staff counsel with the Center for Democracy & Technology. This program is offered for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit. For additional information contact Pam Penczak, administrative assistant in the Center for Information Technology and Privacy Law at ITCenter@jmls.edu or at 312.987.1419.
