U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stevens Guest Lectures at The John Marshall Law School
The Center for Intellectual Property Law at The John Marshall Law School is presenting U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens as the Sept. 13 guest speaker for the 1st Beverly W. Pattishall Distinguished Lecture in Trademark Law. Justice Stevens' topic will be "Section 43(a) of The Shakespeare Canon of Statutory Construction." He will deliver his lecture at 2 p.m. in Room 1200 of the law school, 315 S. Plymouth Ct., Chicago. The Center for Intellectual Property Law is dedicating this annual lecture to Pattishall, an internationally recognized attorney in domestic and international trademark, copyright and unfair trade practices law. Pattishall was an adjunct professor at John Marshall in the 1950s and later was an adjunct professor at Northwestern University School of Law. Pattishall has been active with a host of bar associations, including serving as chairman of the American Bar Association's Section of Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law, and continues as a member of the executive committee of the International Patent and Trademark Association. He represented the United States at the 1978 Geneva Conference on Industrial Property and Consumer Protection, and the 1981 Treaty of Paris Diplomatic Conference in Nairobi. Professor Robert J. NyeActivitiesAppointed with approval of the Illinois Supreme Court, Dean Robert G. Johnston and Professor Robert Nye were the law-teacher members of a committee that served as faculty, prepared papers, and this spring conducted educational seminar sessions on "Chancery and Miscellaneous Remedies", for some 40 Illinois Circuit Court and Appellate Court judges. Students Mike Carroll and Elaine Llerena served as research assistants for Dean Johnston and Professor Nye. The seminar - one of the Regional Judicial Seminars sponsored by the Judicial Education Division of the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts - was held in Bloomington, Illinois. Other faculty members were from the Illinois judiciary, and included Justice Francis Barth (1st District Appellate Court), Judge Bruce W. Black (then Chief Judge, 10th Judicial Circuit, now Bankruptcy Judge, N.D.Ill.), Judge Harold J. Frobish (11th Judicial Circuit), Judge John K. Madden (Circuit Court of Cook County), Judge Ronald C. Riley (Circuit Court of Cook County), and Judge Cyril J. Watson (Circuit Court of Cook County). Papers prepared by the faculty have been published by the Administrative Office in a Reading and Reference Manual on Chancery and Miscellaneous Remedies. Professor Ralph RuebnerActivitiesHe spent part of his spring semester 2001 sabbatical in Israel and Palestine. As a consultant to the United States Agency for International development Rule of Law Project for the West Bank and Gaza, he met with the President of Al-Quds University (East Jerusalem) and the President of An Najah National University (Nablus) and the Deputy Attorney General in Ramallah. He also met with the Dean of the Bir Zeit University Institute of Law, Dean of Law at Al-Quds, and Dean of Law at An Najah. At each law school he met with the law faculty to discuss clinical education, technology and law issues, and developing legal scholarship. He visited with law students at Al-Quds and An Najah. He also gave a number of lectures to law students and law faculty. At Al-Quds he spoke on "The Value of Clinical Legal Education." On a second visit at Al-Quds he spoke on "Science, Technology and Law: The Challenges to Law Schools and the Legal Profession." At An-Najah he delivered lectures on "American Criminal Trial Rights and Procedures" and "Clinical Legal Education and Human Rights Advocacy." On his return to the United States, he submitted a plan to USAID for the development of legal clinical education in the West Bank and Gaza. He was the principal author of a grant application which was accepted by USAID in its University Linkages for West Bank and Gaza Schools of Law with United States law schools. The $400,000.00 grant was announced in May 2001 and awarded to the Law Consortium for Palestinian Legal Education (LCPLE), a law consortium of DePaul University College of Law, The John Marshall Law School, Loyola University Chicago School of Law, Northern Illinois University College of Law, and the Arab-American Bar Association. The goals of the Consortium are to develop legal education in the West Bank and Gaza, and promote the rule of law, democracy, and the legal foundation of future statehood. Professor Ruebner was named Legal Director of LCPLE, a position he shares with Professor John Breen of Loyola. PublicationsThe 4th edition of his book, Illinois Criminal Trial Evidence (Law Bulletin Publishing Company, 2001) was recently published. He also authored a chapter on "Confessions" in the update of the book which he edits, Illinois Criminal Procedure (3d ed. Lexis, 1999).
