Reyes Named Kissane Award Winner

Araceli Reyes (center), the June 2001 Kissane Award winner, accepts congratulations from Paul Kissane (left) and Robert Gilbert Johnston (right), dean of The John Marshall Law School. Reyes was selected from the graduating class for her distinguished law school career and commitment to a career at the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. The Kissane Award, which carries a $5,000 prize, is presented in the name of Elmer Kissane, a John Marshall alumnus who worked for 43 years for the state's attorney's office.

Araceli Reyes was named the June 2001 Kissane Award winner at The John Marshall Law School's commencement ceremony.

The $5,000 award is given by the Kissane family to a graduate of the law school who has a distinguished law school career and is committed to a career with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. The award is given in memory of Elmer Kissane who worked for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office for 43 years.

Reyes attended The John Marshall Law School's evening division program so that she could continue her work with the state's attorney's office. She has been working since1999 with the Victim/Witness Unit in its administrative and juvenile divisions.

"I've dealt with sexual assault and murder cases. I was with families who have lost loved ones. There are a lot of emotions in these cases," Reyes explains. "I found that working there was the best way to know that it was kind of work I really want to do." She worked for a law firm that focused on real estate law, before accepting the Cook County State's Attorney's Office position.

A 1992 graduate of Lane Technical High School, Reyes graduated with a degree in English from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1996, and was admitted into The John Marshall Law School in January 1997. She represented John Marshall at the Hispanic National Bar Association Moot Court Competition.

Reyes is the daughter of Jose A. and Carmen R. Reyes of Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood.
