Professor's Donation Funds ScholarshipThe newly established "Dwight and John Dwight Ingram Scholarship Fund" is named for two distinguished members of the John Marshall family. The endowed fund was established with a generous donation made by Professor John D. Ingram, a 1966 alumnus, in his name, and his father Dwight, of the John Marshall Board of Trustees. The fund is intended to underwrite a partial scholarship to be awarded annually to a deserving second- or third-year student, with preference given to students admitted to John Marshall under the Summer Conditional Program. In 1978, Ingram helped establish the Summer Conditional Program at John Marshall with Professor George B. Trubow. The program accepts students into the law school who would not have been accepted under traditional standards, using letters of recommendation and personal statements that lead the Admission Committee to believe the students will still do well in law school. John Ingram stepped down from teaching in the conditional program in 1999, after having taught conditional students for 21 years. "Students in the Conditional Program have, as a whole, been very successful. If they survive the first summer, they usually do very well in school," Ingram says. "Over the years, several have been members of the Moot Court (Honors Program) and (The John Marshall) Law Review. Some have even been editors. You don't have to motivate them. They are already motivated." Ingram established the scholarship in honor of his father, Dwight, who served on the John Marshall Board of Trustees from 1934 to his death in 1967. An accomplished insurance broker, Dwight served several terms as secretary of the board. He was also a part-time English teacher for the many veterans of World War I, who were motivated to learn the law, but did not have strong English skills. After graduation from Harvard, John Ingram joined his father's insurance agency, eventually serving as president. His first exposure to the law school was in 1950, when he worked with his father on John Marshall's insurance. Eleven years later, Ingram began law school part-time in the Evening Division. He has been teaching at John Marshall since his graduation. "I wanted to do something in honor of the Centennial Celebration something significant, something meaningful," he said of his donation. "John Marshall is a good place to be, and I've enjoyed being here." This area of specialization used to be a niche practice of a few firms, but today almost any large- or medium-sized law firm boasts an employee benefits practice group. Although the program is only a few years old, students who have graduated from John Marshall with this unique degree have already been placed in the employee benefits groups of prestigious firms like Baker & McKenzie, Jenner & Block, Kirkland & Ellis, and McDermott Will & Emery. Kathryn Kennedy, the director of the program, is confident that any student in the program who demonstrates that he or she can handle the work can be placed in an appropriate and rewarding position upon graduation. If you are a current John Marshall Law School student, please stop by to explore whether the joint J.D./LL.M. Employee Benefits program suits your career goals.
