John Marshall Contingent in Korea Addresses International Conference
A delegation of John Marshall faculty and staff forged new ground in April when they met with organizers of a Korean university now organizing a law school and addressed participants at an international conference on technology and intellectual property. Guest speakers April 26 and 27 at the "International Conference on Business, Technology and Intellectual Property in an Information Technology Age" were Dean Robert Gilbert Johnston; Professors Dorothy Li, Doris E. Long and Leslie Ann Reis, with Adjunct Professor David Loundy and Robert Gurwin, an IT research assistant; Judge Matthew F. Kennelly of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois; Jiang Zhipei, a justice with the Supreme People's Court of the People's Republic of China, and a 1998 John Marshall visiting scholar; and Todd L. Juneau, a John Marshall graduate now a partner with Nath & Associates. The delegation was invited to address the gathering by conference chairman Professor Sang Ki-Lee of Handong University. Lee had been a 2000-visiting scholar at John Marshall. The conference was hosted by John Marshall, Korea's Handong University, the Korean Ministry of Information and Communications, and the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. Speakers showcased current issues in electronic commerce; information technology and intellectual property issues in the United States, Korea and China; trademark issues in the information technology age; the role of technology licensing in business and the new vision for a global legal education in the 21st century. Dean Johnston addressed "U.S. Legal Education in the 21st Century;" Professor Reis spoke on "Electronic Commerce and Information Privacy;" Gurwin examined "Electronic Commerce and Transactional Issues in the U.S." followed by Adjunct Professor David Loundy on "Cyber Crimes and Information Security - A Tutorial Paper on U.S. Law;" Professor Doris E. Long discussing "IP and IT Issues in the Global Arena;" and Professor Li spoke on "Knowledge Management in the 21st Century." The visit also marked the beginning of what Dean Johnston and Handong Global University's President Dr. Young-Gil Kim hope will be an ongoing partnership between the two institutions. Handong University, in Pohang, Korea, plans to open its own law school in the coming year to train Korean students in American jurisprudence. Both institutions will work to establish ties allowing members of their respective communities to learn another culture and viewing their legal studies from a new, global perspective.
