Developments In Intellectual Property Topic of John Marshall Conference

Guests from business and industry, the judiciary and intellectual property law firms will offer insights into today's leading legal questions at The John Marshall Law School Center for Intellectual Property Law's 45th Annual Conference on Developments in Intellectual Property Law. The daylong Feb. 23 conference meets at the law school, 315 S. Plymouth Court, Chicago.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the conference begins at 9 a.m.

This year, participants will select from two simultaneous sessions - one dealing with patent law, and the other with E-Commerce.

John Marshall Professor Janice Meuller will moderate the session, "Cutting-Edge Developments in Patent Law." Topics covered in this session include, "Life with Markman: The Northern District of California Experience," addressed by James Ware, judge in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California; "The Infringement/Interference Interface," given by Charles L. Gholz of Oblon, Spivak, McClelland, Maier & Neustadt in Arlington, Va.; The issue of "Pitfalls and Practicalities in Means and Step-Plus-Function Clauses, the Continued Evolution §112, ¶6," discussed by Jerry A. Riedinger of Perkins Coie in Seattle, Wash.

"The Genomics Paradigm - New Patent Issues for a New Era of Science," will be moderated by K. Shannon Mrksich of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione. The panel includes John J. McDonnell of McDonnell, Boehnen, Hulbert & Berghoff; Li-Hsien Rin-Laures of Marshall, O'Toole, Gerstein, Murrary & Borun; and Stasia L. Ogden of Motorola, Inc.

E. Leonard Rubin of Gordon & Glickson will moderate the E-Commerce session.

The topics include, "Digital Distribution of Music," discussed by I. Fred Koenisberg of White & Case in New York, and "E-Commerce Licensing," discussed by Mary M. Squyres and John T. Gabrielides of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione.

An ICANN corporate panel discussion, moderated by Mark V. B. Partridge of Pattishall, McAuliffe, Newbury, Hilliard & Geraldson, follows the presentations. Panelists include Frances M. Jagla of Abbott Laboratories; Jacqueline A. Leimer of Kraft Foods, Inc.; and Thomas E. Fraser of United Airlines, Inc.

The noon luncheon address will be given by Marvin E. Aspen, U.S. District Court chief judge in the Northern District of Illinois.

The afternoon presentation, "Recent Developments in Intellectual Property Law," will be moderated by Howard B. Rockman of Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal. Topics include, "Protecting Your Rights in a Post-TRIPS World," addressed by John Marshall Professor Doris Estelle Long; trade secrets discussed by Melvin F. Jager of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione; copyright discussed by William T. McGrath of Davis Mannix and McGrath; trademark and trade dress outlined by Kevin J. McDevitt of Jeal & McDevitt; and patent litigation addressed by Meredith Martin Addy of Brinks, Hofer, Gilson & Lione.

The conference will be followed by a short reception.

The $195 registration fee for this program includes admission to the program, continental breakfast, luncheon, reception and all course materials. Attorneys can earn approximately 6.5 CLE credit hours. John Marshall Team Competes in Tournament of Champions

U.S. District court Judge David N. Hard (center) welcomed the John Marshall Trial Advocacy team to the Tournament of Champions competition in November at Syracuse University's College of Law. Judge Hard presided at the final trial. Representing John Marshall were (from left) Adjunct Professor Kenneth L. Cunniff; Bridget Hughes, team coach; team member Lisa Damico; Judge Hard; team members Monica Logan and Scott Rempala. To be invited, the John Marshall Law School had to have held the best three-year record in trial competitions sponsored by the Texas Young Lawyer, the American Bar Association, the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Trial Lawyers Association.

Professor Michael L. Closen

Publications

His article about notarial oaths has been accepted for publication in the American Notary, the quarterly newsletter publication of the American Society of Notaries. His article, co-authored with Illinois notary public and John Marshall student Trevor Orsinger, about the problems created by the on-line auction sales of notary seals has been accepted for publication in the Notary Bulletin, the newsletter of the National Notary Association. Professor Closen's article about teaching with recent case decisions [11 Florida State University Law Review 289 (1983)] has been cited in 34 Creighton Law Review at 73 (2000). Early editions of his casebook Contracts: Contemporary Cases and Materials have been cited in 44 St. Louis University Law Journal at 1333, 1487 (2000).

The Annual Barrister's Ball will be held on February 24th from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on the 99th floor of the Sears Tower. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased from Miss Criss's office on the second floor. You will not want to miss this great evening of music, food and dancing, plus one of the best views that Chicago has to offer.
