Hayes was on patrol in the 4300 block of South Indiana Avenue on Labor Day, Sept. 6, 1999, when he learned of the fire and began alerting apartment residents. Officers Miguel Cabrales and Charles Artz joined Hayes in his efforts when someone notified police a child, Jonas Hall, was trapped in a third-story bedroom.
Officer Cabrales returned to the building to rescue the child.
"Officers Cabrales, Hayes and Artz demonstrated high valor in their swift response to the life-threatening situation in which little Jonas Hall found himself," Alderman Edmund Burke told fellow council members at the City Council meeting Sept. 29, 1999.
"Their willingness to take significant risk for this vulnerable child demonstrates the most remarkable sense of selflessness and love to which the human spirit is called. Their deeds tell all of us plainly and simply the value of human life and the highest strivings of the human soul."

As Law Students, we have the opportunity to utilize our professional talents to strive for solutions to community problems. The ABA Law Student Division (ABA/LSD) has created the Work-A-Day program in an effort to encourage law students to supplement their legal education with community involvement. The program requests that each law student organization at every law school participate in a community service event on Work-A-Day. Traditionally, each student organization sponsors a project. However, individually, you do not need to be a member of that organization to participate. I will post sign-up sheets by the end of October. Once the sign-up sheets are ready, anyone is welcome to participate in whichever project he/she chooses. This year, I challenge you to view Work-A-Day from a different perspective. Do not single out November 6 as the one day this year when you give back to the community. Make Work-A-Day into a new beginning. Choose an activity or a project that is personal and that you would like to continue past November.
Please contact me with any suggestions. Also, I need to know if your student organization is interested in sponsoring a project. After all, it is not an option, it is an obligation!

His article about the fundamental problems with U.S. Notarizations in the National Law Journal, October 9, 1995, at A24 has been cited and quoted in the casebook Real Estate Transactions (3d ed. 1997) by Professors Goldstein and Korngold at page 149.
On Saturday, October 9, 1999, he spoke to approximately 75 law students and new lawyers at the semi-annual Attorney's Title Guaranty Fund Seminar on "Navigating a Residential Real Estate Transaction". The all-day seminar was held at IIT-Kent Law School. Prof. Scheid distributed updated materials on the drafting of a "form" real estate contract, and spoke on various provisions that a prudent purchaser's attorney would craft into the contract. He was one of five presenters who covered topics ranging from setting up a real estate practice, through mortgage financing and title questions to tax ramifications of ownership of real estate.
On September 30, David Sorkin presented a talk at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. The topic of the talk was Governing the Internet; it was part of an interdisciplinary seminar series on Science and Culture.
