Joy E. Tolbert Nelson and Shanin T. Farmer, third-year students at The John Marshall Law School, have captured two out of three scholarships for local law students from the Black Women Lawyers Association of Greater Chicago, Inc. (BWLA).
Tolbert Nelson, awarded $1,500, and Farmer, awarded $1,000, were selected based on their academic records, extracurricular activities and career goals. BWLAs scholarship program is designed to increase minority participation in the legal profession and to advance human and civil rights.
Tolbert Nelson received a bachelor of science degree in biology from Carlow College in 1990. Before enrolling at John Marshall, she helped inner city schools and YMCAs across the country establish environmental service projects as grant manager for the YMCA Earth Service Corps Fellowship Program.
Her passion for environmental issues has shaped her law school career. Tolbert Nelson represented The John Marshall Law School in the National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition and is president of the John Marshall Environmental Law Society. She is an active member of the Black Law Students Association, Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity and is a student member of the Chicago Bar Association Environmental Law Practice Committee. She will pursue a legal career in environmental justice after graduation in June 2000. Tolbert Nelson and her husband, Carl, live in Chicagos Lakeview neighborhood.
Farmer, the daughter of Ernest and Jana Farmer of Wheaton, Ill., received her bachelor of science degree in marketing from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1992. She worked as a marketing analyst for Rust-Oleum Corporation and the Quaker Oats Company before enrolling at John Marshall.
Farmer ranks eighth in her law school class and is a member of "The John Marshall Law Review." She is the John Marshall student representative to the Womens Bar Association of Illinois and is a student member of the Chicago Inn of Court and the Chicago Bar Association. As a member of the Black Law Student Association, Farmer helped plan its spring 1999 event highlighting African-American legal educators.
Farmer, who was a judicial extern for U.S. District Court Judge Blanche Manning, will receive a J.D. degree in January 2000. She resides in Chicagos South Loop with her husband, Aloysius Jay Reeves.
The "Decisive Utterance," The John Marshall Law Schools student newspaper, has won second place honors in the American Bar Associations Student Lawyer Division law school newspaper competition for an editorial on the DuPage Seven trial.
Lance Northcutt, editor of the DU, accepted the award Aug. 6 during a dinner program at the ABAs annual meeting in Atlanta. The first place winner in the editorial category was UCLA, and third place went to Suffolk University of Boston.
Editors of the Student Lawyer Magazine served as judges reviewing the 26 entries in the editorial category for quality of writing and persuasiveness. Decisive Utterance also was entered in the "best feature" and "overall paper" categories. It was the first time DU has entered the competition.
Northcutt, who wrote the editorial, said he selected the topic because "it interested me because I felt the media handling of the issue was inconsistent with the known facts of the case." Northcutt believes both sides law enforcement officials as well as Rolando Cruz and his attorneys made mistakes. At the same time, Northcutt said he had a difficult time believing police had conspired to fabricate a case against Cruz in the death of Jeanine Nicarico.
On July 17, he delivered a lecture entitled "Discovery: Fact and Myths" at the 1999 Forum for State Court Judges in San Francisco, sponsored by the Roscoe Pound Foundation.
