John Marshall Awards Honorary Degree to Cardinal
Francis Cardinal George accepts the honorary purple academic hood of law from John E. Corkery, associate dean for academic affairs, as The John Marshall Law School presents him with his first honorary J.D. degree. The presentation was made during a formal convocation Sept. 24 that opened the law school's centennial celebration. Louis L. Nathaniel R. Jones as the 1998 Jurist-in-Residence. Distinguished civil rights attorney, prominent community leader and human rights spokesperson, noted author and educator, Judge Jones was appointed to the Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in 1979. Prior to service on that court, Judge Jones served as Assistant Counsel to President Johnson's National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders ("the Kerner Commission"). Later, he served as General Counsel of the NAACP. During his tenure at the NAACP, Judge Jones coordinated the organization's attack against northern school segregation, supervised its defense in the Mississippi Boycott case, directed the national response to attacks on affirmative action, and led an inquiry into racial discrimination in the military. Judge Jones has written extensively about civil rights and equal protection in the United States, and human and political rights in Africa. He is highly regarded within the academic community and has taught at numerous law schools including, Harvard Law School, CUNY (named the first to hold the Haywood Burns Chair in Civil Rights), University of Cincinnati, Case-Western Reserve University, and Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Judge Jones's active involvement in civic, bar, and law school organizations epitomizes the finest tradition of public service. Faculty Activity and PublicationsProfessor Ronald Z. Professor Mark E. WojcikPublicationsHis book, Introduction to Legal English, has been added to the law libraries of Arizona State University College of Law, Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, the University of Connecticut School of Law, Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center, the University of Maryland School of Law, Fordham University School of Law, Brooklyn Law School, and The John Marshall Law School. His writings about sexual orientation under international law were included in Harvetta Asamoah, Alya Kayal, Emily Chuo, Melanne Anromecca Civic, Barbara A. Frey, Bonnie H. Weinstein, Deborah Anker, Lauren Gilbert, Nancy Kelly, Lindsey Stevenson, and Mark E. Wojcik, International Human Rights, in 32 Internatioanl Lawyer 559 (1998).
