Greetings From the Deans

The Office of Student Affairs welcomes you back to John Marshall. My office is located in Room 210, adjacent to the bookstore, and my door is always open to you. Please come by if you have any questions or concerns, or if you just want to tell me how your semester is going. Don't forget Student Organization Day coming up on September 8 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. We have over thirty student organizations from which to choose, and they present a great opportunity for students to serve the community while networking with future colleagues.

Publications

He authored five entries in the Encyclopedia of AIDS: A Social, Political, Cultural, and Scientific Record of the HIV Epidemic, just released in 1998 by Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers. Of the more than 180 individual contributors to the Encyclopedia, only five people contributed five or more entries. Professor Closen wrote the entries about "Blood Transfusions", "Confidentiality", "Court Cases", "Legislation", and "Quarantine".

First Tuesday

The John Marshall Alumni Association invites alumni, faculty, staff, and students to First Tuesday.

This event is held the first Tuesday of every month (September 1), from 5 _ 7 p.m. at Cardozo's, 170 W. Washington.

We have reserved the back room. There will be a cash bar and munchies…a $5. 00 donation would be appreciated.

Please join us for this relaxed, monthly gathering. No reservations required just come on over. We will be introducing Ilene Breitbarth, the new Director of Alumni Relations.

Irish Attorneys Participate in Advocacy Program

Adjunct Professor Kenneth Cunniff (left), and Professor Kenneth Kandaras (right), director of the Center for Advocacy and Dispute Resolution, welcomed Irish attorneys Catherine Murray (second from left) and Caroline Biggs (second from right) as they prepared to participate in the two-week intensive trial advocacy program earlier this month. Murray is in the United States training at the Federal Defender's Program through October. Biggs, a barrister practicing criminal law, came to John Marshall for the two-week course after participating in the John Marshall Trial Advocacy Program in Dublin in May.

Student Bar Association

The SBA would especially like to welcome the new incoming students and extend our greeting to all the returning students. Several events have been planned for September to start off the academic year and accustom students both old and new back to school. Student Organization Day will be held September 8 in the student lounge from 4-6 p.m. Students are encouraged to come and learn about the various activities that John Marshall has to offer. Note: Dinner will be served! Also, be aware students that petitions for class representative will be available on September 8th, at 9:00 a.m. in the SBA office for those interested in being a part of the SBA and representing your class. The 21st of September will be the first official SBA meeting. Please come and give us your input on how you would like the SBA Board to serve you this academic year, pizza and pop will be served! For all other upcoming activities, please check the SBA board outside the SBA office and signs posted throughout school. Best of luck with your upcoming studies.

John Marshall Banners Announce Centennial

Banners announcing the start of The John Marshall Law School's centennial celebration will line several streets in Chicago's Loop during September.

The maroon, gold and black banners will carry the slogan "1899-1999 A Legacy of Opportunity, A Lifetime of Achievement." Pedestrians will notice the banners along Dearborn Street between Washington and Randolph Streets; on Washington Street between Dearborn and Clark Streets; on Jackson Boulevard between State and Dearborn Streets, and on Plymouth Court between Jackson and Congress Boulevard.

The Law School opens its centennial celebration September 24 with a 3 p.m. formal convocation followed by a reception. Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles E. Freeman, a 1962 alumnus, will be the guest speaker.

Upcoming Centennial Events

Celebrating 30 Years of Fair Housing: A Focus on Fair Housing Enforcement

September 11 - 12, 1998

For 30 years, fair housing laws have tried to bring about justice and equality for all people. During this milestone year, The John Marshall Law School looks back on the last three decades of fair housing enforcement. Panels of experts will analyze racism as it relates to housing, explore the effectiveness of the Fair Housing Act in eradicating housing discrimination, examine the evolution of the laws (from racism to discrimination against disabled persons) and discuss new initiatives which may further the cause of fair housing.

Delta Theta Phi

Delta Theta Phi will be hosting its first meeting Tuesday, September 1 at 5:15 p.m. in room 201. Details for the upcoming initiation (September 18) will be discussed. Please plan on attending.

Hispanic Law Students Association

HLSA is hosting its first meeting on Wednesday, September 2 at 5:15 p.m. in room 201. Please come by if you are interested in joining. Pizza will be served.

Feeling Extracurricular?

Student Organization Day is September 8 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. This is your opportunity to get a glimpse of the many JMLS student organizations has to offer. By joining an organization, you can be part of a rewarding experience by having direct access to scholarship information and grants while also be making advantageous contacts in the legal community.

Representatives from all JMLS student organizations will be present to answer any questions you may have. The SBA will be sponsoring this event and will be providing a free delicious dinner. Stop by the student lounge and check it out.

Attention Women Law Students

The Women's Law Caucus is an organization for women law students whose purpose is to raise awareness about women's issues, promote equality between the genders and is a general forum for exchanging ideas. It's a great opportunity to gain access to scholarship, grant, and job opportunities. If you would like more information about joining this organization, please contact Miss Criss (room 212) or Professor Connor (room 1216).

Sing a Song - Accompanist and Vocalists Wanted

The John Marshall Vocal Ensemble is a drama and music group, which provides an atmosphere for relaxation and a departure from the daily rigors of legal study. They perform two concerts a year - one at holiday time and one in the spring. The Ensemble is seeking an accompanist for the 1998-99 academic year. If you are interested in participating in the ensemble or being an accompanist, please see Miss Criss in room 212.
