Convocation Marks Official Opening Of Centennial Celebration at John MarshallThe John Marshall Law School has become a Chicago institution since its founding in August 1899 by Edward T. Lee, a Harvard graduate, with the assistance of 10 eminent attorneys. The law school accepted its first class of three students Sept. 20, 1899. The school was founded on the belief that admission to law school should not be based on one's race, ethnicity or religion. It has remained committed to those high ideals. The John Marshall Law School also was one of the first law schools to accept women and African-Americans. "What began from lofty goals has stayed the test of time," said Dean Robert Gilbert Johnston. "Our predecessors have left us much to celebrate, and we are happy to carry their ideals and work of preparing America's lawyers into the 21st century. "It is especially an honor to open our 100th anniversary celebration by recognizing Justice Freeman, a John Marshall graduate. His work, and that of the more than 11,000 other graduates this past century who have helped protect the public through the law, gives us cause to celebrate," Johnston noted. A convocation ceremony featuring an address by Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice and John Marshall alumnus Charles E. Freeman will officially open the celebration marking the founding of The John Marshall Law School. The 3 p.m. Sept. 24 convocation will be at the law school, 315 S. Plymouth Ct., Chicago. Cardinal Francis George of the Archdiocese of Chicago will deliver the invocation. Other local and state dignitaries are expected to join with faculty, students, alumni, and representatives of the judiciary and legal community for the ceremony.
