Building Hours for 4th of July HolidayTo celebrate Independence Day, The John Marshall Law School (including the library) will be closed on Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4. No access to the Law School will be possible on those days. Regular hours will resume at 9 a.m. on Sunday, July 5.Fall Semester Date ChangeClasses for the Fall 1998 semester will begin on Thursday, August 20. PRC Judge Visits John Marshall
Dean Robert Gilbert Johnston presents a plaque to Judge Jiang Zhipei of the People's Republic of China marking the three months he spent at The John Marshall Law School as a scholar at large. Judge Zhipei is deputy chief judge of the Intellectual Property Trial Chamber of the Supreme People's Court in China. He also is completing a doctorate in civil law at the People's University of China.Alumni AssociationJesse G. The planning commission is expected to act on a redevelopment project for the downtown business district. Professor Ralph RuebnerActivitiesHe lectured at The Decalogue Society of Lawyers' C.L.E. programs on May 6 and May 13, 1998. His topics were "Developments in Evidence, Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure - A Perspective from the United States Supreme Court." Professor Debra StarkPublicationsHer book, Consensual Transfers of Distressed Real Estate, was published by the American Bar Association. The book provides a comprehensive approach to negotiating, structuring and documenting this type of transaction. It analyzes from the perspective of the borrower, lender and guarantor, the myriad of issues, problems and strategies they should consider including: reducing the tax consequences of the disposition, the use of executory deed transactions and/or pre-packaged bankruptcies, and reducing exposure to environmental liability. The book also contains a comprehensive set of documentation, many of it annotated. Professor Stark was the editor of the book and authored one of the chapters of the book. Her co-authors are experts in real estate law from around the country, including, John C. Murray, who is a member of the Board of Advisors of The John Marshall Law School's LL.M. in Real Estate. Professor Mark E. WojcikActivitiesHe was elected to the Executive Committee of the Legal Writing Institute, a national organization with membership of more than 1,000 professors, judges, legislators, and other writing professionals. He was installed on June 25, 1998 as a new member of the Board of Managers of the 22,000-member Chicago Bar Association during the Association's Annual Luncheon Meeting. He also received two committee awards for his service as Chair of the Chicago Bar Association Committee on Military Law and Veterans Affairs (1996-97 and 1997-98) and as the Founding Chair of the Chicago Bar Association Committee on the Legal Rights of Lesbians and Gay Men. |
