Courts Building Named for Markey

markey

The National Courts Building in Washington will be renamed the Howard T. Markey National Courts Building. Legislation awaits the President's signature after the House approved the measure June 3, acting on a Senate bill that had passed in September 1997.

Markey, dean emeritus of The John Marshall Law School, served as chief judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit from 1982 to 1990, and was an active judge on this court after his resignation as chief judge. Prior to his appointment to the Federal Court of Appeals, Markey served for 10 years as chief judge for the United States Court of Customs and Patent Appeals.

Markey was the first active judge to have sat with every Federal Court of Appeals. He sat in more than 1,400 cases and wrote more than 250 opinions for the Regional Circuit Courts in every field of law, in addition to 5,000 cases and 800 opinions for the Court of Customs and Patent Appeals and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
