John Marshall Alumni Association Honors Attorney Philip Corboy With 1998 "Freedom Award"

Honoring Philip Corboy

The Alumni Association of The John Marshall Law School will honor Philip H. Corboy (seated) with its Freedom Award at the association's annual luncheon May 15 at the Palmer House-Hilton Hotel. Members of the awards selection committee are (from left) E. Steven Yonover, Umberto S. Davi, Carol M. Green, Cook County Circuit Court Judge Jesse Reyes and Enrico J. Mirabelli.

The John Marshall Law School Alumni Association will honor attorney Philip H. Corboy, one of the nation's best-known personal injury trial attorneys, with its 1998 "Freedom Award" in recognition of his nearly 50 years of championing the cause for justice. The noon luncheon program will be held on Friday, May 15, at the Palmer-House-Hilton, Chicago.

The alumni association's selection committee said Corboy's continued efforts at advocacy, both for his clients and the legal profession, make him a stand-out in the legal community.

Corboy, of Corboy & Demetrio, has lost only one personal injury case in a 29-year string of cases that dates to 1966, and even that one decision was overturned on appeal. Corboy also has been unwavering in his efforts to overturn Illinois tort reform law and quash proposed federal regulations that would limit judgments in personal injury cases.

"Phil Corboy has made his reputation through honesty, hard work and having a genuine concern for his clients," said Judge Jesse G. Reyes of the Cook County Circuit Court, president of the John Marshall Alumni Association.

"From humble beginnings, Corboy has earned national respect both within and outside the legal community. The profession owes a debt of gratitude to Phil Corboy for his continued efforts to show the average American that the legal system can and does work," Judge Reyes added.

Corboy will be the 21st recipient of the Freedom Award, established in 1974 to honor those who through their philosophies, accomplishments or professions reflect the basic tenets of freedom.

Raised in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood, Corboy graduated from St. George High School and attended St. Ambrose College and Notre Dame University. He went on to Chicago's Loyola University School of Law, graduating in January 1949, and immediately started work as an assistant corporation counsel for the city of Chicago. During his first year of practice, Corboy recalls how he drafted ordinances and wrote legal opinions, and won his first case before the Illinois Supreme Court on a question of redeeming tax anticipation warrants.

Shortly afterward, former Illinois Supreme Court Justice James Dooley, then in private practice, approached Corboy about names of young lawyers he might consider for his practice. Corboy recalls that at the time he knew little about being a trial lawyer, but he decided to go for the position himself.

Two weeks after joining Dooley's firm, Corboy was in court arguing for insurance money for two young widows.

"The thrill of representing injured people in genuine need of advocacy consumed me," Corboy says. "Their needs became my needs. In just a three-day trial, my life was ordained." Although Corboy lost that first case, he says it "(supplied) me with the answer to why I needed to become a trial lawyer. The complexities of later lawsuits have been different. But with all my cases, I have been privileged and honored to represent people who need me."

Tickets for the Freedom Award luncheon are $50. For additional information about attending the program, contact The John Marshall Alumni Association at (312) 987-1411.
