Irish Law Professor Visits John Marshall

Professor Gerard Whyte from Trinity College in Dublin will be visiting the Law School the week of September 9-13, 1996 as part of a faculty exchange program recently instituted between The John Marshall Law School and Trinity College Dublin. On September 1 1 Professor Whyte will be featured as a guest speaker in The John Marshall Distinguished Speaker Series. The title of his speech will be, "Religion Under the Irish Constitution: A Comparison With the U.S. Experience." During his visit to the Law School, Professor Whyte will also participate in round table discussions with faculty members from John Marshall and other area law schools. Additionally, he will visit classes and familiarize himself with teaching in an American law school. In the spring semester, Professor Julie Spanbauer will represent The John Marshall Law School in Ireland. While there, she will also visit classes, participate in informal discussions with faculty members at Trinity College and deliver several speeches.

NAPIL Fellowships for Equal Justice

The Career Services Office has application materials and further information for several fellowships. The deadline for the following fellowships is November 1, 1996:

NAPIL Fellowships for Equal Justice (NFEJ)

Now in its fourth program year, NFEJ has 13 fellows in the field, and 10 new fellows beginning in September 1996. NFEJ provides salary and loan repayment assistance to lawyers who advocate on behalf of individuals, groups, or interests that are not adequately represented by our civil legal system.

Public Interest Law Fellowship

The law firm of Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati will sponsor a fellowship for lawyers who desire to provide civil legal services to under-represented people in the Northern California area with a preference for projects related to family law or children's issues.

The McClendon Cy Pres Fellowship for Consumer Issues

Judge John F. Kraetzer of the California Superior Court has awarded a portion of the cy pres funds in a consumer class action case to create a public interest legal fellowship. The McClendon fellowship, which will commence in the fall of 1997, is designed as one in which the fellow must work at a sponsoring organization in California and must develop a project to work on consumer rights' issues of statewide impact.

The Arnold & Porter Public Interest Law Fellowship

The law firm of Arnold & Porter will sponsor a fellowship for lawyers who desire to provide civil legal services to under-represented people in the Washington, D.C. area. Fellowship will commence in the fall of 1997.

Using the Computer as a Job Search Tool

Although you probably already use Lex-is and Westlaw for classes, did you know that both of these program have a wealth of information that can help you with your job search? To learn more about how you can use these two software programs in your job search, attend the workshop "Using the Computer as a Job Search Tool" which will be held on Tuesday, September 10th from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Room 1100 and will be repeated on Wednesday, September 11th from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in Room 1100. Stop by the CSO for more information and to register for the workshop. Registration is required.


New Course Omitted from Catalog

The new John Marshall catalog inadvertently omits a description for a new seminar course approved last year by the faculty.

Human Rights in a Changing Society: Lesbians, Gay Men, and the Law

This seminar will explore the legal regulation of sexual orientation and identity. The seminar begins by examining historical viewpoints of sexual orientation and the myriad effects that religion, culture, science, and politics have had on sexual orientation law. The main part of the seminar will then survey legal issues affecting lesbians and gay men and others with a non-traditional sexual orientation. This survey will consider legal problems within a national and international human rights framework.

Professor Ronald Z. Domsky

Activities

He spoke at the Illinois Society of CPA's annual Midwest Accounting/Business Management Show at the Rosemont Convention Center on August 29th. His subject was, "LLPs and LLCs: Liable To Liberate Assets From Creditors, Or Lots of Lavish Phees & Cash For Lawyers." More than 12,000 people attended this year's show.

Professor Celeste M. Hammond

Activities

She is one of 18 lawyers nationally elected to the American College of Real Estate Lawyers (ACREL). She will be inducted into the organization at its October meeting in San Francisco. At the annual meeting of the American Bar Association, Professor Hammond was appointed vice-chair of the Commercial Leasing Subcommittee on Publications of the Section on Real Property, Probate & Trusts.

Professor Michael J. Polelle

Activities

From October 19-25 he will accompany a trade delegation, headed by Chicago Alderman Charles Bernardini, which will visit Rome and the University of Cagliari on the island of Sardinia. At the request of the faculty of the university he will deliver a lecture in Italian on the topic: "Religion and the United States Constitution."

Professor Ralph Ruebner

Activities

He taught a week-long, intensive evi-dence course for state judges at Harvard Law School for the National Academy of Judicial Education and prepared written materials and mastered seven video tapes of evidence scenarios.

Publications

He co-authored a law review article with two former research assistants, Jennifer Berner and Anne Herbert, entitled "Shaking the Foundation of Gideon: A Critique of the Supreme Court in Overturning Baldasar in Nichols." He co-authored an article with Jeffrey Weill, Esq. (Jewish Federation of Chicago staff attorney) entitled: "Combating International Terrorism While Protecting Constitutional Rights: An Analysis of Illinois' New International Terrorism Law." This article will be a book chapter on international terrorism. (They are the authors of the legislation as well.) He wrote a chapter about confessions and edited chapters of co-authors in a 250-plus page supplement to Illinois Criminal Procedure (Michie; published August 1996).

Professor George B. Trubow

Activities

He addressed the Chicago Decalogue Society at a dinner meeting on August 27. The topic was "Protecting Human Rights in Cyberspace; He shared the program with Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Associate Dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. The program considered law and policy for dealing with harassment, hate mail, defamation, pornography and crime on the Internet.


Center for Real Estate Law

The Graduate Program in Real Estate Law welcomes 25 new students. This includes five full-time students who expect to receive their LL.M. degrees in June, 1997.

Three members of the Graduate faculty were the only lawyers from Illinois recently elected to the American College of Real Estate Lawyers (ACREL). Congratulations to Janet Johnson of Schiff, Hardin, & Waite, James O'Brien of Chapman & Cutler and Professor Celeste Hammond, Director of the Program. These join adjunct Professors Robert Berger, Allan Goldberg, Thomas Homburger, Samuel Lawton, Nina Matis, Patrick Moran, Alan Robin, Stanley Sklar, Ray Werner as well as Hugh Brodkey, John Daniels, John Murray and Beverly Quail of the Advisory Committee in membership in this prestigious association.

Journal of Computer and Information Law

After just completing Volume XIV, No.4 , Intellectual Property Protection of Software: International Perspectives, The Journal of Computer & Information Law is busily under production with Volume XV, No.1., a composite of topics including "reflections" on computer technology and the law from two premier computer law architects, Roy N. Freed and Lee Loevinger. Also included in this issue is a foreword by Professor George B. Trubow, an article by Professor Doris E. Long entitled Intellectual Property and International Law Focusing on Computer Technology, and a student comment written by Dawn L. Johnson, The First Amendment in Cyberspace: Exploring the Need for Content Regulation to Shield Minors.

Media Services Department

Videotape and audiotape recordings of classes.

Throughout the semester many professors will havetheir class sessions video or audio taped for a variety of reasons, ranging from anticipated student absences to a special guest speaker. The request for a class to be recorded must come from the professor. The videotapes or audio cassettes, if made available, can be checked out for 24 hours from the library circulation desk with up to three renewals, unless otherwise noted. Copies are limited and may only be available for a limited time. The library has several VCRs and cassette players for student and faculty use. The September 10 & 11, 1996 Student Lounge video presentations will be the 8th Annual Symposium on Media Law: "Can A Public Figure Get a Fair Trial in the Media Age?" featuring CNN commentators Roger Cossack and Greta Van Susteren. A lively discussion about the O.J. Simpson trial and the media's role in the justice system.

The 7th Belle R. & Joseph H. Braun Memorial Symposium will explore the status of the death penalty nearly 25 years after Furman. This two-day symposium and workshop will bring together those who work within the death penalty system, including professors, prosecutors, and defense lawyers, and commentators from outside, including philosophers, theologians, and concerned citizens.

Intellectual Property Protection: An International Conference

In his lecture, Professor Whyte discusses the constitutional protection of religion in Ireland. He also attempts to dispel some myths about Ireland through a comparison of religious freedom under the Irish Constitution with the religious freedoms afforded under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Gerard Whyte, M.A., B.L., LL.M., B.C.I., is a full-time lecturer in the Faculty of Law at Trinity College Dublin. He has authored, co-authored, and edited books on the Irish Constitution, trade union law, social welfare law, and religious morality and public policy. He has acted in an advisory capacity to various national groups including the Department of Social Welfare, the Combact Poverty Agency, and the National Council for the Aged. He is also an active member of the Free Legal Advice Centres Ltd., the Coolock Community Law Centre, and the Social Policy Section of the Institute of European Affairs.
