Professor Zito Retires After 35-Year Career

Professor Anthony S. Zito was honored at a farewell luncheon at the Standard Club of Chicago on Nov. 24 after announcing his retirement from The John Marshall Law School faculty in August 2010.

He will be on sabbatical for the spring 2010 term.

Dean John Corkery and John Marshall board of trustees members Jordan Peters and Umberto Davi presented Zito with his parting gift, a baseball autographed by Cleveland Indians player Rocky Colavito. Corkery reflected on how the law school had changed the past 35 years from one building and 22 faculty to three buildings, 80 faculty and 1,600 students. “Thank you, Tony, for the many kindnesses you’ve shown over the years.”

Zito was overwhelmed with the outpouring of friendship as he ticked off a list of people who were so important to him, including Professors Ronald Domsky, Ronald Smith, and Professor John Scheid.

Zito had been teaching at Northern Kentucky University Law School when he came to John Marshall in 1974 and helped organize the Legal Writing Program. Stories of Zito’s willingness to work with others and his ability to connect with students were presented by Professors Celeste Hammond and Ardath Hamann.

“I’d been practicing for eight years before I came to academia,” Hammond said, “and Tony helped me choose the course materials” so that she could design a legal writing curriculum. Today, the legal writing program has nearly 20 faculty members, but in the 1970s, Zito was responsible for a large number of adjunct professors for the program. “He was generous in his time and spirit. He has earned the gratitude of many of his students,” Hammond added.

Hamann started law school at John Marshall and Zito was one of her first-year professors. She remembers not wanting to be in legal writing because it didn’t interest her. “But something changed when I got in to Tony’s class. He lit a spark in me, and 18 months later he hired me as an adjunct.” Hamann said the family line came full circle when 20 years late, she had Zito’s daughter, Judy, in her class.

“Rarely do you get to thank someone who helped change your life. Tony, I want to say ‘thank you’,” Hamann said, for helping her find a career that has meant so much.

Professor Michael Polelle remembered his colleague as someone who didn’t veer from his path to the law school, even though Polelle urged him to discover Chicago. He joked about Zito never responding to e-mails. But that wasn’t what was special about Zito.

“He is somebody with a good heart. Sometimes we get lost in pretentions and hierarchy. Tony always told it like it was. His basic attitude about John Marshall was we’re all family. I’m going to miss your common touch and worth,” Polelle told him.

The textbook gives students hands-on approaches to real estate dealings by bringing to life the business and legal issues underlying commercial real estate development. The book examines the life cycle of a real specialty shopping center, starting with a thorough look at what it takes for a developer to get financing, and ends with the real-life deed in lieu of foreclosure by the developer to its lender.
