John Marshall Team Takes Second in Tax Moot Court Competition

The team of Samantha Pennington and Jack O'Connor represented The John Marshall Law School at the 2009 Mugel Tax Law Moot Court Competition, hosted annually by the University of Buffalo Law School.

The team finished in second place in the final round, arguing in front of an eight-panel bench acting as the United States Supreme Court. The judges included a sitting United States Tax Court judge, a justice from United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, a justice of the New York State Court of Appeals, an attorney from the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, and several law professors that specialize in income tax.

The team also won Second Place Brief and Samantha Pennington won Second Best Oralist. They were coached by Barry Kozak (JD/LLM/EB '00), associate director of the Tax and Employee Benefits Graduate Programs.

According to Kozak, "Samantha and Jack were both already wonderful law students, but the competition surely allowed them to develop and appreciate the selflessness and professionalism needed to work as part of a team, and they collectively discovered their individual strengths and weaknesses."

SBA Public Interest Auction

This year's Mardi Gras Public Interest Auction, hosted by the Student Bar Association (SBA) on Feb. 24, was a great success. Auctioneers Professor Cecil Hunt and Associate Dean Rory Smith got the crowd involved in the day's bidding and the silent auction.

"As a result of the annual Public Interest Auction, this year the SBA will be able to award around $22,000 in funds for public interest scholarships. This represents the largest annual public interest scholarship fund in 27 years, and will go a long way to helping several students that are pursuing careers in that directly benefit the public," said Adam Snyder, auction director.

For months before, Snyder and his SBA committee worked at collecting donations for the auction. In all, more than 120 items were bid on. "Everybody really came together to pull this off," Snyder said. "Our goal was 10 scholarships, and I know now that that will be possible."

Students who will work in public interest this summer are eligible for a scholarship. Applications are available at the Student Bar Association office in Room 215. The application deadline is April 6.
