John Marshall Welcomes Guest Faculty

Veterans Cash Lottery Ticket Benefits VLSC

Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Director Tammy Duckworth (seated) welcomed staff members from the Veterans Legal Support Center & Clinic (VLSC) (standing, from left) Nicholas Henry, Professor Joseph Butler, Brian Morris and Michael Barnicle, to the Pritzger Military Museum for the launch of the 2008 Veterans Cash lottery ticket. Veterans Cash is the Illinois Lottery's first lottery ticket designating 100 percent of proceeds for support of Illinois veterans. The VLSC received a $100,000 grant from the proceeds in 2007 and a $100,000 grant from the proceeds this year.

Chinese Lawyers Discuss Intellectual Property Law Strategy at Caterpillar

Chinese lawyers who are at The John Marshall Law School for intensive intellectual property law (IP) training, made a trip to the Caterpillar headquarters in Peoria, Ill., for discussions with Caterpillar executives on the company's IP strategy and IP protection in China. Caterpillar is the world's largest maker of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, and industrial gas turbines. Food for the Needy

Feinberg Case Revisited

A lively discussion of the Illinois Appellate Court decision of In re Estate of Feinberg drew more than 50 students for the program hosted by the Decalogue Society at The John Marshall Law School. John Marshall representatives and panelists were (from left) Associate Dean Ralph Ruebner; David Lipschutz, president of the Decalogue Society; Associate Dean Rory Smith; Andrea M. Schleifer, president of the Decalogue Society of Lawyers; Professor Steven H. Resnicoff of DePaul University College of Law; Professor Clifford Scott-Rudnick of The John Marshall Law School; and Robert S. Held of Harrison & Held. Panelists discussed the court finding unenforceable as contrary to public policy a testamentary stipulation that "any of the testator's grandchildren who marry outside the Jewish faith, unless the spouse has converted or converts within one year of the marriage to the Jewish faith, will, for purposes of the testamentary instrument, be deemed to be deceased, along with all of his or her descendants."

Activities
On November 14, 2008, he spoke at the Biolaw Conference at the University of Kansas. The topic of his talk was "Patent Claim Construction and Biotechnology."
Activities
He was a featured speaker at a Nov. 13 conference in Davenport, Iowa, focusing on the predatory home lending crisis impacting communities across the country.
The program was sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the Iowa Civil Rights Commission and the Davenport Civil Rights Commission. The program was attended by 160 attorneys, bankers, brokers and community and government representatives.
Seng described the current foreclosure crisis and its causes for the audience members, explaining the benefits of looking at the crisis from a civil rights perspective. He outlined a number of current cases in litigation that have been undertaken under fair housing/fair lending laws.
Stella Adams, former director of the North Carolina Fair Housing Center, joined Seng as a speaker. She described the historical background for the current financial crisis.
The conference ended with a lively question and answer session, and Seng was interviewed by several local TV networks for evening newscasts.
Activities
On November 14, 2008, he spoke to LLM students at the University of Bologna Faculty of Law in Bologna, Italy, about careers in international law and how to become involved in bar association activities.
