Herzog Lecture Focuses on Jewish Historical Archives

The examination and benefits of the 50 million World War II-era documents in a Nazi-era archive will be the topic for The John Marshall Law School Dean Fred F. Herzog Memorial Lecture, "Opening the Red Cross International Tracing Service Archive," given by Professor Kenneth Waltzer on Sept. 17, 2008.

The lecture will be given at 12:30 p.m. at The John Marshall Law School,

315 S. Plymouth Ct., Chicago. The program is free and open to the public.

The presentation by Waltzer, director of Jewish Studies at Michigan State University, will focus on what led to the release of the International Tracing Service (ITS) documents and what is included in the contents of the archive.

He also will discuss the significance of the documents for Holocaust survivors and other persecuted by the Nazis, and what students and scholars can learn about the Holocaust, the upheaval of Europe in the mid-20th century, and human behavior under extreme conditions.

In June 2008, Waltzer was one of 15 scholars from around the world who explored the ITS archive through a program sponsored by the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies of the U.S. Holocaust Museum.

Waltzer is a recognized scholar with interests in immigration history and modern Jewish history. His interests include issues of multiculturalism and inter-group relations, East European Jewish immigration, history and memory about the Holocaust, and the development of two new post-Holocaust centers of Jewish life in Israel and the United States.

He is researching and writing a book, The Rescue of Children and Youths at Buchenwald, and is drawing on the ITS documents as evidence, together with interviews and testimonies.

Alumni Debut Golf Videos on ChicagoBusiness.com

John Marshall alumni Kevin Hull (J.D. '00) and Adam Kelly (J.D. '02) recently created "The Golf Buddies," a twice-monthly video segment aired on Crain's Chicago Business online.

"We created `The Golf Buddies' to share our passion of the game with you," Hull said in the first segment.

"There are things you can learn from the game of golf that are directly applicable to your life and your business," added Kelly.

Each "episode" of the segment is intended to help viewers develop business and personal relationships.

Topics discussed in the segment include networking on the course, how business relates to golf and how to conduct yourself on the course with a client, as well as information related to the game itself, including how to use a walking caddy and what to expect when invited to play at a private club.

As Kelly describes the philosophy of the segment, "The game of golf translates into the game of life. If you show respect for the game throughout your round, those who play with you will always want to play with you again. "

Hull says the mission of the segment is "to provide insights into the meaning of the game; the social side of golf; to help you develop your game both on and off the golf links."
